Hakeem Jeffries Just Told America What Democrats Actually Believe About DEI

Apr 14, 2026

Al Sharpton's crowd cheered when Hakeem Jeffries called merit a cover story for mediocrity.

Now the House Minority Leader just compared rolling back DEI to an attack on the United States itself.

He just handed Republicans the sharpest weapon of the 2026 election cycle.

Jeffries Defends DEI Military Spending While Recruiting Collapsed

Jeffries didn't just defend diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at this week's National Action Network convention.

He put them on equal footing with the nation itself.

"When you attack diversity, equity, and inclusion, you attack the United States of America," Jeffries proclaimed.

Read that again.

Not "DEI is a worthwhile policy." Not "we disagree on this approach."

Attack DEI – attack America.

That's the Democratic Party's position in 2026.

Jeffries didn't stop there.

He told the crowd that Republicans aren't actually trying to promote merit – they're trying to "elevate mediocrity."

Then he held up Pete Hegseth as his proof.

"The most unqualified Secretary of Defense in American history," Jeffries called him.

The same Pete Hegseth who purged gender ideology from America's military.

The same Pete Hegseth who shut down DEI offices and identity months across the Department of Defense.

The same Pete Hegseth who built the warfighting machine Trump promised – unrelenting, uncompromising, mission-focused.

Jeffries called that mediocrity.

What DEI Did to Military Recruiting and Combat Readiness

Before Trump took office, the Pentagon ran diversity offices, hosted identity awareness months, and factored demographic considerations into officer promotions.

Hegseth called it the "war on warriors" – the title of his bestselling book and the mission that defined his first year at the Pentagon.

The Biden military spent years signaling to recruitment-age Americans that its priorities included diversity targets and climate commitments alongside warfighting.

Recruiting collapsed.

The Army missed its fiscal year 2023 recruiting goals by 15,000 soldiers – the worst shortfall in half a century.

Then Trump won, Hegseth took over, and the Department of War – yes, that's what he renamed it – got a new mission statement.

"Warfighting, preparing for war, and preparing to win, unrelenting and uncompromising in that pursuit."

Hegseth scrapped DEI offices, ended identity months, eliminated what he called "gender delusions," and banned climate ideology from military training.

By Jeffries' logic, that's an attack on America.

The Sharpton Test

Notice where Jeffries said this.

Not the House floor. Not a CNN town hall. Not even a party fundraiser.

Al Sharpton's National Action Network.

This is the same Al Sharpton who spent decades as a racial grievance entrepreneur, who made his name stoking division from Tawana Brawley to Crown Heights.

Jeffries called Sharpton's organization his ideological home base – "I'm so thankful that Reverend Sharpton and the National Action Network continues to lean in."

That's who Democrats go to when they want to say what they really think.

And what they really think is that hiring based on skills and performance is an attack on America.

What they really think is that 330 million Americans who want the best-qualified people in the most critical jobs are enemies of the country.

Democrats' DEI Defense Hands Republicans a 2026 Election Issue

Democrats spent years insisting DEI was just about fairness – a thumb on the scale to correct historical injustices.

Jeffries just revealed the actual belief: DEI isn't a policy correction. It's a definition of what America is.

Which means in their framework, you can't oppose DEI and be a patriot.

You can't support merit-based hiring and love your country.

You can't agree with Trump's Day One executive order – "Ending Radical And Wasteful Government DEI Programs And Preferencing" – without being an enemy of the United States.

He handed Republicans the clearest possible contrast heading into 2026: one party thinks America means hiring the best people. The other party thinks that's an attack on the country itself.

The American people already voted on this question in November 2024.

Jeffries apparently didn't get the memo.
