Hakeem Jeffries Blamed Donald Trump for Gas Prices and a New York Co-Host Made Him Instantly Regret It

Jun 18, 2026

Biden hit $5.02 a gallon – and Democrats told you to shut up and call it "Putin's price hike."

Now Hakeem Jeffries is on morning television blaming Trump for "skyrocketing gas prices."

A Good Day New York co-host just handed him the receipts.

Jeffries Walked Into a Wall of His Own Making

Jeffries appeared on Good Day New York Monday morning to blast Trump's handling of the Iran conflict, claiming rising gas prices had cost American families significantly.

Co-host Rosanna Scotto stopped him cold.

"Gas prices were up under Obama too. And Biden, right?" she said.

Jeffries tried to pivot.

Scotto pressed harder: "Didn't we have gas prices over $5?"

"Well, there were gas prices in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic situation…" Jeffries said.

That answer was false.

The national average hit $5.02 per gallon in June 2022 – not in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, but two full years later, while Biden's anti-energy policies were in full effect and Democrats were pointing fingers at Vladimir Putin.

Then Scotto twisted the knife further.

"And I remember eggs were like $12 a dozen," she said.

Eggs averaged $4.82 a dozen in January 2023 under Biden.

They averaged $2.19 a dozen in May 2026 under Trump.

The interview moved on to the Knicks championship before Jeffries could collect himself.

The Rules Only Apply to Republicans

This isn't the first time Jeffries has been caught playing both sides of the gas pump.

In March 2022 – when Biden's prices were surging – Jeffries stood at a press conference and told Republicans not to "play politics with an existential crisis."

He called higher gas prices under Biden "some sacrifice that is required across the world."

When a reporter asked what House Democrats were discussing about record gas prices, he said the issue "hasn't come up."

Now he's posting on social media asking "Is this what the golden age in America looks like?" over $4.55 gas.

Democrats spent four years telling you gas prices were too complex for politicians to control.

Putin did it. COVID did it. The global supply chain did it.

Your president had nothing to do with it.

The moment a Republican sits in the Oval Office, every cent at the pump is a personal moral failure.

Jeffries Picked the Worst Possible Morning to Make This Argument

Jeffries went on television to attack Trump for gas prices the same morning oil markets shed nearly 13% from their mid-week peak.

Trump had announced a deal with Iran on Sunday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz – the waterway carrying roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply.

Brent crude had already been falling for three straight weeks as negotiations gained momentum, and dropped sharply again Monday after Trump posted that the agreement was complete.

Jeffries didn't just get his Biden facts wrong.

He attacked Trump over a problem already being solved in front of him.

Biden strangled domestic production, canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, drained the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for political optics, and left America exposed to every global shock.

When prices exploded, Democrats blamed a foreign dictator.

Trump got accused of starting a "reckless war of choice."

He ended it with a deal that's already driving oil prices down.

One president made you dependent.

The other is making you energy dominant.

Rosanna Scotto asked one question.

Hakeem Jeffries had no answer.
