George Clooney Defended Jimmy Kimmel and Said Something That Should Disqualify Him Forever

May 1, 2026

Someone attempted to assassinate Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents' Dinner two nights ago.

George Clooney showed up to an awards gala where he accepted a trophy named after Charlie Chaplin.

But then Clooney used his speech to defend a joke calling Melania Trump an "expectant widow."

What Clooney Actually Said – and Why It Matters

Kimmel called the First Lady of the United States an "expectant widow" on national television last Thursday.

Two days later, a California man named Cole Tomas Allen walked through a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents' Dinner with guns and knives and had to be tackled to the ground.

Allen left behind writings stating he intended to assassinate the President and eliminate as many senior administration officials as he could.

On Sunday night – with Allen's arraignment still pending – George Clooney took the stage at the Chaplin Award Gala in New York and told the room that Kimmel's joke was basically equivalent to Leavitt saying Trump would deliver "shots fired" at the dinner.

Leavitt was on the Fox News red carpet hyping her boss's speech.

Clooney's argument – delivered while accepting a trophy named after a comedian – is that a press secretary building anticipation for a presidential roast is the same rhetorical act as calling the First Lady a death-watcher.

"Jimmy's a comedian, and I would argue that Karoline Leavitt didn't mean shots should be fired," Clooney told the crowd, according to Variety. "She was making a joke. Fair enough."

Fair enough.

This Is the Third Time ABC Has Covered for Kimmel

Melania Trump didn't see it that way.

"Kimmel's hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country," she wrote Monday. "A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him."

She's right – and she has the receipts.

Last September, ABC suspended Kimmel after he suggested on air that Charlie Kirk's assassin might be a Trump supporter – when prosecutors had already confirmed the killer's left-wing politics.

ABC pulled the show, affiliate stations followed, and Kimmel was back on the air six days later.

Now ABC is staring at the same choice for the third time, and Melania Trump is asking the same question she had every right to ask: "How many times will ABC's leadership enable Kimmel's atrocious behavior at the expense of our community?"

Clooney Said the Quiet Part Loud

Clooney added something else at the gala that deserves to be read carefully.

"When one side is calling anyone they disagree with traitors to the country – which is a charge that's punishable by death – just because they don't agree with someone, I think the rhetoric is a little too heated."

He's describing Trump supporters.

This is the same George Clooney who recently called a Trump social media post threatening Iran a "war crime" – language with a very specific legal meaning, deployed with no apparent sense of irony.

The left has spent nine years telling you that conservative rhetoric causes violence.

They've demanded deplatforming, investigations, and prosecutions for words they deemed dangerous.

And then the weekend someone shoots up a Washington ballroom full of Cabinet members and press, George Clooney walks onto a stage – awards in hand – and defends a joke about the First Lady's husband dying as protected comedy.

Leavitt stood at that podium Monday and named what she saw: a media and entertainment class that has spent years legitimizing political violence through escalating rhetoric, then goes silent the moment accountability arrives.

Clooney didn't dispute it.

He just gave Kimmel a standing ovation instead.
