Gavin Newsom's wife walked into San Quentin and told convicted murderers their crimes were probably just accidents.
She said it to their faces – and then apparently thought it was worth sharing publicly at a UC Berkeley conference.
Now the clip is everywhere, the victims' families are watching, and the man who wants to be president can't make it disappear.
What Jennifer Siebel Newsom Actually Said
In a 2016 clip from a UC Berkeley conference, Jennifer Siebel Newsom described visiting San Quentin to interview inmates for her documentary The Mask You Live In.
She told the audience she opened up to the men by sharing a personal tragedy – a few days before her seventh birthday, she accidentally reversed a golf cart over her older sister Stacy, who died from the injuries.
Then came the part that lit the internet on fire.
Siebel Newsom told the lifers she was "perhaps in the wrong place at the wrong time – but wasn't punished the way they were because clearly it was an accident, but theirs was probably an accident too."
Read that again.

San Quentin at the time housed California's death row – men convicted of serial killings, child murders, rape-murders, and mass violence.
The prison held Scott Peterson, convicted of murdering his pregnant wife Laci and their unborn son.
It held Richard Allen Davis, who kidnapped and strangled 12-year-old Polly Klaas.
It held the "Grim Sleeper," convicted of murdering nine women and a teenage girl over decades.
Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., responded with the kind of clarity the moment deserved: "Yeah, like the time that guy accidentally stabbed that dude 27 times."
The Victims Nobody Mentioned
Riley Gaines put her finger on exactly what made this so enraging.
"Newsom's wife's latest virtue signal is telling San Quentin lifers that she faced zero consequences when her sister was killed because it was an accident, then telling them their life sentences are probably for 'accidents' too," Gaines wrote on X. "Peak elite tone-deafness."
She's right – but there's something even darker here than tone-deafness.
The people conspicuously absent from Siebel Newsom's empathy exercise are the victims.
The families of Polly Klaas. The family of Laci Peterson. The families of the nine women murdered by the Grim Sleeper.
Nobody in that conference talk mentioned them.
This is the Newsom worldview in pure, unfiltered form – the criminal is the protagonist, the system is the villain, and the victims don't make the guest list.

Harmeet Dhillon – the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice – saw the clip and responded with two words: "What the…"
Adam Carolla summed it up cleanly: "She represents everything that is wrong with California."
This Is What Runs California
The clip didn't go viral in a vacuum.
Gavin Newsom spent years building the legal and philosophical architecture that produced this moment.
He placed a moratorium on all executions in California in 2019 – protecting the very death row population his wife was visiting.
He actively campaigned against Proposition 36 in 2024, the voter-approved measure that reversed years of soft-on-crime policies and reinstituted accountability for repeat offenders.
When California voters passed it anyway by a wide margin, Newsom dragged his feet on funding it – according to the Heritage Foundation, he offered money critics called inadequate and already allocated.
Now his wife is on tape telling mass murderers they're just like her.
This isn't a gaffe.
This is what these people actually believe.

She didn't stumble into that comparison – she prepared it, rehearsed it, and delivered it like a revelation.
Newsom's press office responded to the viral clip by calling it "the MAGA distraction machine – in full force" and pivoting to foreign policy.
They wanted to talk about anything other than what was on the tape.
The tape is what matters.
California's victims didn't get a spokesperson at the conference.
They didn't get an empathy exercise.
They got a governor who blocked their justice and a first partner who told their killers it was probably just an accident.
That's not compassion.
That's California's ruling class telling you that your suffering doesn't fit the narrative.
