California taxpayers just funded their own replacement.
That money went to the same activist groups now calling ICE agents terrorists in the streets.
Here is where every dollar went – and who gave the order to send it.
The Billion-Dollar Machine Nobody Voted For
The Manhattan Institute just documented what Newsom's government has been quietly building since he took office.
It is not a social safety net.
It is a political machine – funded by taxpayers, staffed by activists, and designed to produce one thing: Democratic votes.
The numbers are specific. Newsom's California granted more than $250 million to Catholic Charities. Another $85 million to Jewish Family Services. $23 million to the Immigration Institute of the Bay Area. $12 million to Centro Legal de la Raza.
And $110 million to a single Latino political organization called the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles, better known as CHIRLA.
You paid for all of it.
What CHIRLA Did With the Money
CHIRLA is not a charity.
Christopher Rufo documented it in City Journal: CHIRLA runs propaganda operations, files legal actions, and puts bodies in the streets – all three under one roof, all three funded by the state of California.
When Trump's ICE agents began enforcing immigration law in Los Angeles this year, CHIRLA's executive director Angelica Salas stood at a street protest and told the crowd that ICE was conducting a "militarized siege" against illegal migrants.
"We are going to stop Trump's terror campaign against our community," Salas said. "We will not stop marching. We will not stop fighting."
Then she called for a "Summer of Resistance."
California taxpayers gave her organization $110 million to say that.
CHIRLA also coordinates the L.A. Rapid Response Network – a system that tracks ICE raids in real time and takes direct action to shut down detention centers.
The state of California funded a network specifically designed to obstruct federal law enforcement.
That is not an accusation. That is what the money paid for.
The People the Machine Runs On
Carmelo arrived from Mexico's Yucatan region three years ago.
He is undocumented. He works at a grocery store on 16th Street in San Francisco, stacking cabbages and pulling bad mushrooms from bins. He lives in an apartment with his son and two nephews. All four of them pay $2,950 a month.
MissionLocal.org captured his story in March. It tells you exactly what the machine runs on.
Carmelo is not a political operative. He is a laborer.
But when you import 400,000 people like Carmelo at taxpayer expense, several things happen simultaneously.
Landlords profit because four men are sharing space meant for one family. Elite Californians profit because Carmelo cleans their offices and parks their cars at below-market wages. Nonprofits profit because Carmelo needs services funded by state contracts. And one day, when Carmelo is gradually naturalized, Democrats profit because Carmelo votes.
Another family – this one from El Salvador – crammed 15 people into a two-bedroom unit in San Francisco's Excelsior neighborhood during the pandemic.
Your Uber cost dropped. Your landlord's income went up. Newsom added to his political base.
This Is Not New – It Is Just Larger Than Before
Irish political machines ran the same playbook in the 1880s.
New York's Tammany Hall gained power as Irish immigrants fleeing the famine flooded American cities. The machine provided services, built loyalty, and harvested votes. It collapsed only when Congress blocked mass migration in the 1924 Immigration Act.
Newsom is running Tammany Hall at scale – with federal COVID relief money, state budget surpluses, and a nonprofit sector that functions as the machine's ground troops.
The difference is that Tammany Hall was honest about what it was.
Newsom calls it compassion.
What Happens When the Supply Gets Cut Off
The people who funded CHIRLA don't care about wage projections.
They care that Carmelo keeps showing up at $15 an hour while their gardener bills stay flat.
When ICE enforces the law and the labor pool tightens, employers actually have to compete for workers again – meaning they have to pay Americans what Americans are worth.
CHIRLA calls that a terror campaign.
The people whose wages are going up call it overdue.
