Gavin Newsom's own chief of staff just pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges.
Now the man eyeing the 2028 White House is on PBS demanding Trump face accountability.
And Gavin Newsom made one comment about impeaching Donald Trump that caught everyone by surprise.
The Man Who Wants to Fight Corruption Has a Corruption Problem
Newsom sat down with PBS NewsHour this week and delivered a message so tangled it nearly tied itself in a knot.
He said a Democrat impeachment of Trump would be "a sideshow and a distraction."
Then he said Democrats should go "wherever the facts lead."
Then he said anyone who has "picked their pocket illegally should be held to account."
“On the accountability front, do you want to see Democrats impeach the President if they win back the majority?” co-host Amna Nawaz asked.
“I don’t — if the facts — wherever the facts lead,” he said. “And I’m not naive about the politics of that, because it will be a sideshow and a distraction,” he continued. “What I don’t want to do is see another impeachment that amounts to nothing except a virtue signal, and that’s important.”

Dana Williamson – his own chief of staff from 2022 to 2024 – pleaded guilty in May to federal conspiracy, bank fraud, and tax charges tied to a scheme that funneled $225,000 from a dormant campaign account into private hands.
Fake consulting arrangements.
A "no-show job" used to launder the cash.
Luxury vacations expensed as business write-offs.
The scheme was running while Williamson sat inside the governor's office.
Newsom's response at the time was to say he "expects all public servants to uphold the highest standards of integrity."
The man who expects integrity now wants the country to trust his instincts on corruption.
Newsom Has Already Made His 2028 Calculation
Republicans have been predicting this moment for two years.
Trump warned his own caucus in January 2026 that if Democrats flip the House, "they'll find a reason to impeach me."
Speaker Mike Johnson said Democrats would "vote to impeach on their first day."
The National Republican Congressional Committee built digital ads around exactly this scenario – calling it Democrats' "Project 2026."
Newsom knows the trap.

He knows impeaching a president the Senate will never convict is political poison – Republicans impeached Clinton in 1998 and voters rewarded Democrats at the polls for it, and that lesson has haunted Democrat leadership ever since.
He also knows that saying "follow the facts" keeps him in good standing with the base demanding scalps while giving him plausible distance from the circular firing squad.
He wants credit for accountability without the political cost of pulling the trigger.
California Is the Template He's Selling
Newsom spent significant airtime in the interview selling California's record – $11 insulin, free diapers for newborns, paid sick leave, "universal healthcare."
That's his pitch for 2028.
The problem is that the same administration produced Dana Williamson.
Federal investigators say the corruption scheme covered the full period Williamson served as Newsom's chief of staff.
The DOJ under Biden launched the investigation.
Williamson pleaded guilty under Trump.
Newsom calls that accountability.

He calls Trump's continued DOJ investigations into California Democrats a political witch hunt.
The difference, apparently, is whose friends are getting indicted.
Newsom is now under a separate federal investigation himself – one he claims Trump ordered to kneecap his 2028 campaign.
The self-appointed sheriff of corruption just watched his own chief of staff cop a plea deal.
And he's going on PBS to explain why Trump needs to be held responsible for the "rank corruption" in his administration.
