New York elected a self-described socialist as mayor.
Now Gallup has the numbers to explain exactly how that happened.
And Gallup just proved the Democrat Party is no longer hiding what it actually believes.
Democrats Have Abandoned Capitalism
Forty-three percent of Americans now view socialism favorably.
That's only 12 points behind capitalism – which sits at 55 percent.
Gallup has tracked this question since 2010, and positive views of socialism never cracked 39 percent.
Until now.

The driver isn't some mystery.
Democrats – the party that used to at least pretend to defend American free enterprise – have flipped entirely.
Back in 2018, 57 percent of Democrats viewed socialism favorably.
Today that number stands at 65 percent.
Meanwhile, Democrats who view capitalism favorably dropped from 42 percent to 35 percent in a single year.
They didn't drift left.
They sprinted.
The Party Elite Already Knew This Was Coming
The Gallup data isn't a surprise to anyone paying attention.
New York City's new mayor Zohran Mamdani stood on the steps of City Hall in January and told the crowd exactly who he is.
"I was elected as a democratic socialist," Mamdani declared at his inauguration, "and I will govern as a democratic socialist."
The crowd cheered.
Mamdani's agenda includes hiking taxes on millionaires, freezing rents citywide, and eliminating bus fares.
And a separate summer poll from the Economist/YouGov found that a majority of Democrats would vote for a candidate who calls themselves a "Democratic Socialist" – confirming Mamdani is the blueprint, not the exception.
They Haven't Read the Manual
Here's what the 43 percent cheerfully ignore.

Venezuela entered the twentieth century sitting on the largest oil reserves in the western hemisphere, with a growing middle class and genuine prosperity within reach.
Then Hugo Chavez arrived with price controls, nationalizations, and socialist redistribution – the exact policies Mamdani is promising New York.
A Venezuelan immigrant and Manhattan Institute fellow named Daniel Di Martino has watched this movie before.
"They took away our property," Di Martino said of the socialist government. "They destroyed our industry through price controls, through regulations, through high taxation, and they turned what should be really one of the world's richest countries into one of the world's poorest."
Venezuela's annual inflation topped 130,000 percent under Maduro.
More than 80 percent of the population lives in poverty.
Parents abandoned children in orphanages because they could not feed them.
That is not a cautionary tale.
That is a manual for what happens next.
And yet 65 percent of the Democrat Party views the system that produced it favorably.
The Age Gap Is the Real Warning
Gallup's generational numbers are where this story gets genuinely alarming.
Americans 55 and older favor capitalism over socialism by a 65-to-34 margin.
Adults 18 to 34 favor socialism over capitalism – 57 to 43.
That means the generation with no memory of the Cold War, no awareness of what Soviet bread lines looked like, and no connection to the immigrants who fled Castro, Chavez, or Mao – is now the most enthusiastic constituency for the ideology those people were running from.
They have been taught that socialism means free healthcare and forgiven student loans.
Nobody told them about the 130,000 percent inflation.

Nobody showed them Venezuela's empty supermarket shelves.
Nobody explained that Churchill called socialism "the equal sharing of miseries."
They are about to find out the hard way – and New York is already paying for their education.
Mamdani controls a budget bigger than the GDP of most countries on earth.
That is not a poll number.
That is what 65 percent Democrat approval of socialism actually looks like when it walks out of a survey and into a government building.
This is exactly the threat Trump has been naming since 2019 – when the media called him an alarmist for warning that the Democrat Party was going socialist.
Gallup just proved he was right.
And the voters who showed up for him in 2024 knew it before Gallup bothered to ask.
