ESPN Just Shut Down Colin Kaepernick’s Documentary and Left Him Without a Platform

Aug 21, 2025

Colin Kaepernick thought he had Hollywood in his back pocket.

The anti-American quarterback figured his days of kneeling during the national anthem would translate into documentary gold.

But ESPN just pulled the plug on Spike Lee’s Colin Kaepernick docuseries and left the former NFL player scrambling for relevance.

ESPN Kills High-Profile Kaepernick Project

ESPN announced they were canceling Spike Lee’s documentary about Colin Kaepernick after what they’re calling "creative differences."¹

The sports network tried to put a diplomatic spin on the decision with corporate speak.

"ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences," ESPN said in a statement. "Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film."²

But Spike Lee’s reaction at a Beverly Hills red carpet event told a different story.

"It’s not coming out. That’s all I can say," Lee said when asked about the documentary.³

When pressed for details, the "Do the Right Thing" director clammed up.

"I can’t. I signed a nondisclosure [agreement]. I can’t talk about it," Lee explained.⁴

That’s not exactly the response of someone who had a friendly parting of the ways.

The documentary was supposed to feature "extensive new interviews and a vast never-before-seen archive to help Kaepernick tell his story from his perspective."⁵

That’s just another way of saying it was going to be a propaganda piece designed to rehabilitate Kaepernick’s image as the quarterback who put his political activism ahead of his country.

The Rise and Fall of Colin Kaepernick

Kaepernick played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 until 2016, when he decided to use football games as his personal political platform.⁶

He started kneeling during the national anthem to protest what he claimed was police brutality and systemic racism.

The move ignited a firestorm as millions of Americans watched a millionaire athlete disrespect the flag and the military members who died defending it.

In 2017, Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the 49ers and wasn’t signed by another NFL team.⁷

He filed a grievance against the league, alleging collusion among team owners, which was privately settled in 2019.⁸

But here’s what really happened – NFL owners realized that Kaepernick wasn’t worth the headache.

His talent didn’t justify the circus that followed him everywhere, and teams made smart business decisions to avoid the controversy.

What This Really Means

Here’s what ESPN figured out that took them way too long to realize.

Colin Kaepernick isn’t the hero that Hollywood liberals thought he was.

The guy who disrespected America on national television every Sunday doesn’t have the broad appeal that entertainment executives assumed he did.

And you know what? ESPN’s decision shows that even woke corporations have limits when it comes to how much anti-American content they’re willing to produce.

The documentary project was first announced in 2020 under Kaepernick’s first-look deal with Disney through his Ra Vision Media production company.⁹

But production didn’t actually begin until 2022.¹⁰

The initial announcement came during the height of the Black Lives Matter riots when corporate America was falling all over itself to prove how "woke" they could be.

Fast forward to 2025, and the appetite for Kaepernick’s brand of America-bashing has dried up.

Even Spike Lee – who built his career on racial grievance politics – couldn’t make this project work.

The timing of this cancellation isn’t coincidental either.

The NFL became a part owner of ESPN just two weeks ago in a deal announced on August 6.¹¹

While sources claim the cancellation had nothing to do with the NFL’s involvement, that’s exactly what you’d expect them to say publicly.

But behind closed doors, the league that Kaepernick sued for "collusion" now has a financial stake in the network that was going to air his documentary.

You don’t need an MBA to figure out how that math works.

The bottom line is this: Colin Kaepernick’s 15 minutes of fame are officially over.

The man who thought he could leverage his football career into a media empire just got a reality check from the entertainment industry.

And that’s exactly what happens when you bet your future on being the poster boy for hating America.
