The USGA spent three years telling every golfer in America their drives were going to shrink.
Now they're backing down – and the president just made sure everyone knows why.
Trump went on Truth Social Wednesday night and called this a BIG VICTORY, and he wasn't wrong.
Trump's Courses, Trump's Game
The USGA and R&A cooked up this plan back in 2023.
The idea was simple: make golf balls fly shorter – up to 15 yards at the professional level, up to five yards for regular golfers.
They called it the Overall Distance Standard rollback and scheduled it to hit the pros in 2028 and everyone else in 2030.
The golf world pushed back hard from day one.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan declared publicly in 2023 that his tour could not support the rule change.
Tour pros were furious – especially bigger hitters who would be punished more than others by the new testing standards.

Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley stood up for the rollback at his Masters press conference in April, but the tours wouldn't follow.
Then Cameron Young – one of the PGA Tour's longest hitters – started quietly playing a prototype Titleist ball already built to meet the 2030 standards, and barely noticed a difference in distance.
That lit up the debate again right before the USGA's own U.S. Open.
The Governing Bodies Just Admitted They Were Wrong
On Wednesday – the eve of the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills – the USGA, R&A, PGA Tour, and DP World Tour put out a joint statement.
Translation: no rollback before 2030, and even the 2030 plan is now back on the drawing board.
USGA CEO Mike Whan stood at the podium and said something remarkable: the current proposal "probably isn't enough."
That's the chief executive of the organization that spent three years telling every manufacturer, every amateur golfer, and every pro that this was the definitive answer to distance creep – admitting it was never going to work the way they promised.
Meanwhile, driving distances on the PGA Tour had already grown nearly 25 yards over the 24 years the governing bodies spent studying the problem.
Trump stepped right into that mess Wednesday night and called it what it was.
"It was a ridiculous idea, that nobody wanted," Trump wrote, "especially PGA Tour Players, and people that don't want to go to a Course to be told that their drives will be going 20 yards shorter."
He also credited Jay Clayton – his U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, currently in line for a bigger role – for the victory.
The Game Is Hot and the Bureaucrats Wanted to Cool It Down
Here's the part the golf establishment never wants you to hear.
Golf participation exploded in the past decade.
Equipment technology made the game more fun, more accessible, and more exciting for everyday players.
Regular golfers – the kind who save up for a driver and head out on weekends – love hitting the ball far.

Telling those golfers their new equipment was about to be legislated into obsolescence was never a winning political position.
Trump put it perfectly: "The game of Golf is 'hot as a pistol.' The last thing we should do is tell people that, for no reason whatsoever, you will not be able to hit a ball as far as you used to."
The USGA spent years building a bureaucratic case for why it needed to make the game worse.
Trump spent one Truth Social post explaining why that was insane.
He just said what every golfer already knew.
When the president of the United States, who owns 16 golf properties and has done more to grow the game's profile than anyone in the sport, tells you that you're making a mistake, maybe listen the first time.
