Mark Carney walked away from a trade deal last Friday night.
Days after talks collapsed and 50 percent tariffs slammed into $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, Trump sat down with Glenn Beck and said what a lot of Americans have been thinking for decades.
And Donald Trump called it one of the worst countries in the world to deal with – and then explained exactly why that was the last mistake Canada gets to make for free
Decades of Getting Fleeced Right Next Door
"They have taken advantage of the United States for many decades, actually," Trump told Beck.
He's not wrong.
Canada has run a goods trade surplus with the United States every single year dating back to the 1970s – fifty years of American workers on the losing end of this relationship.
The numbers got so bad that by 2023, the goods deficit hit $64 billion – the worst it had been since the George W. Bush years.
And Canada's weapon of choice has been the tariff.
Trump called out the dairy tariff specifically, and here's what that actually looks like in practice.
Canada built a wall around its dairy market in the 1970s to protect Canadian producers, then designed a quota system so restrictive that American farmers can't get anywhere near the cap that would let them compete.
They don't need the 250 percent tariff to fire.

The wall does the job before a single American gallon of milk crosses the border.
"We're not able to get anywhere near that cap, even though we have buyers who tell us they would like to bring in our product," said Becky Rasdall Vargas of the International Dairy Foods Association.
Canadian bureaucrats built a cage.
American dairy farmers stand outside it watching their market disappear.
That's been the arrangement for half a century, and Washington, DC let it happen.
Carney Walked Away – Then Called It an Attack
Last Friday night, after days of intensive negotiations, Canada declined to sign the deal the Trump administration had put on the table.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer was blunt: "Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week."
Fifty percent tariffs hit at midnight.
Carney's response was to call it a "miscalculation" – then announce dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting September 8.
He also told reporters Canada was "at war" with the United States.

A country that has extracted sixty billion dollars a year from American workers just declared itself a victim.
Trump's Truth Social response cut through it: "Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one."
That's the whole story.
Why the 50 Percent Tariff on Autos, Parts, and Steel Is the Right Call
Trump announced a 50 percent duty on all cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel from Canada beginning January 1, 2027 – and Canada's response was to keep making side deals with China.
Earlier this year, Carney flew to Beijing and cut a deal with Xi Jinping – lowering tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles into the Canadian market while the U.S. was trying to shut China out of North American supply chains entirely.
Trump's response was direct: Canada will not become a back door for Chinese goods into the American market.
Greer made the strategic logic explicit last week: "I've got two countries in the world that have retaliated against the United States for trade measures: the People's Republic of China and Canada."
Canada put itself in that sentence.

American auto workers in Michigan and Ohio built their careers on an industry Canada has been quietly undercutting for twenty years – protecting its own market with tariffs while demanding open access to ours.
That ends now.
Trump spent nearly two years extending deadlines, negotiating in good faith, and giving Carney every opportunity to make a real deal.
Carney kept walking.
The tariffs are not a punishment.
They're the acknowledgment of a reality Washington refused to name for fifty years – Canada has been taking advantage of us, and Trump is the first president willing to back that up.
