Donald Trump Said Something About Meghan Markle That the Royal Family Was Too Polite to Say Themselves

Sep 6, 2026

Meghan Markle spent years calling Trump divisive, misogynistic, and unfit for office.

Now she needs to live in his ally's kingdom.

And Donald Trump said something about Meghan Markle that the Royal Family was too polite to say themselves.

Trump Delivers the Verdict the Royal Family Won't

Trump didn't hesitate when reporters asked how he felt about Harry and Meghan packing up and leaving California for good.

"I'm happy about it," he said. "I was not a fan."

Then he went further.

"I thought they treated the royal family with great disrespect," Trump said. "I didn't like the way she acted. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen, to King Charles."

And then he said the thing that no member of the royal family has been willing to say on the record.

"I don't know, maybe I'm different. I wouldn't have taken them back. Frankly, if I were the royal family, I wouldn't have taken them back," he said.

That's a sitting American president – with a closer relationship to the British monarchy than almost any leader in recent memory – saying the royal family made a mistake by welcoming them home.

King Charles reportedly "welcomed" the opportunity to spend more time with Harry and the grandchildren.

Six Years of Attacks, Then They Want the Keys Back

To understand why Trump's words land so hard, remember what Harry and Meghan actually did.

They sat down with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and accused an unnamed royal family member of expressing concern about their unborn child's skin color.

They filmed a six-episode Netflix documentary airing every grievance they could summon.

Harry wrote Spare – an indictment of his family that accused his stepmother Queen Camilla of leaking private information to the press and described his brother Prince William as physically aggressive.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams called it a sustained campaign, describing the Sussexes as conducting "a form of guerrilla warfare" against the royal family since stepping down as working royals.

For six years, they monetized every private wound.

Then Harry lost his appeal for taxpayer-funded security in Britain in 2025 – and suddenly the country they spent years torching looks appealing again.

Their children are enrolled in British schools.

They arrived at Birmingham International Airport last Wednesday.

They're keeping the California house, naturally.

The Pattern Here Is Not Complicated

Meghan called Trump "divisive" and "misogynistic" during a 2016 television appearance.

Trump called her "nasty" in 2019.

In February of last year, when asked about potentially deporting Harry over immigration issues, Trump said he'd leave him alone – then added: "He's got enough problems with his wife. She's terrible."

Trump later softened toward Harry personally after running into him at the Invictus Games, saying he thought Harry was being "led around by the nose."

That tells you exactly where Trump places the blame.

He's not angry at Harry.

He's angry at a woman who spent a decade attacking his friend's family, called him divisive and unfit, failed to build the Hollywood empire she left for, and is now returning to the country she said drove her to the edge – with her children in tow and no royal duties required.

Trump sees that for what it is.

The royal family has made clear there will be "no alteration" to Harry and Meghan's status as private, non-working individuals.

No return to duties.

No rehabilitation tour.

No second act inside the palace.

But Trump is looking at this from the outside – and he's saying what a lot of people in Britain are quietly thinking.

You don't get to spend six years calling your family racist, airing their private conversations on Netflix, and writing a book designed to humiliate your stepmother – and then walk back in like none of it happened.

That's not reconciliation.

That's leverage running out.
