Trump Ties Voter ID and Proof of Citizenship to DHS Funding Deal
Speaking at a public safety roundtable in Memphis on Monday, Trump delivered a message to Republican leadership that reframes the entire DHS standoff.
"Don't make any deal on anything unless you include voter ID, and you have to be a citizen to vote," Trump said.
He argued the connection isn't political gamesmanship – it's common sense.
"Voter ID is part of Homeland Security and citizenship," he said. Then: "Proof of citizenship is part of homeland security. So I think it should be welded in. I think it should be together."

The SAVE America Act – which requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot – has been stalled in the Senate while Democrats demand ICE reforms as their price for funding the agency they've held hostage for more than a month.
Trump's instruction to Republicans: tie them together and force Democrats to vote against both at once.
Democrats Block TSA Paychecks While Demanding ICE Be Defanged
The DHS shutdown hitting day 37 isn't a policy dispute – it's a Democratic protection racket for illegal immigrants.
While TSA officers miss rent payments and rack up debt just to keep showing up for work, Schumer's demands center entirely on shielding illegal aliens from deportation.
Democrats want judicial warrants before ICE can enter a home to arrest an illegal immigrant.
They want agents to remove their masks – which would expose federal officers to the radical leftists who have spent months doxxing them.

They want ICE officers to display their names and badge numbers at all times.
They want deportation operations banned near schools, churches, hospitals – essentially turning every sensitive location into a sanctuary.
The DHS has documented a 55% callout rate at Houston Hobby Airport in a single day.
More than 400 TSA officers have quit the force entirely because they can't afford to keep working without pay.
Spring break travelers at LaGuardia waited so long the TSA PreCheck line stretched into the parking garage.

Why Trump Is Using the Airport Chaos to Force a Vote on Voter ID
Trump's move turns Schumer's hostage strategy against him.
Democrats want to separate TSA funding from ICE funding – pay the agents in the security line, keep fighting about the agents kicking down doors.
Trump just told Republicans to refuse that deal unless voter ID comes with it.
Pew Research found 83% of Americans support requiring government-issued photo ID to vote – including 76% of Black voters and 71% of self-identified Democrats.

Schumer called the SAVE America Act "Jim Crow 2.0." Thune fired back that comparing basic ID requirements to Jim Crow was an insult to the majority of Americans – including minorities – who see voter ID as nothing more than common sense.
The House passed the SAVE America Act in February.
This is the third consecutive year the House has passed similar legislation.
It stalls in the Senate every time because Republicans can't reach the 60 votes needed to break the Democratic filibuster.
Trump just handed Republicans a choice: either Democrats fund DHS with voter ID attached, or they keep the airports broken and own the chaos heading into the 2026 midterms.
The Real Reason Democrats Keep Blocking the SAVE America Act
Voter ID isn't what Democrats are actually afraid of.
The SAVE America Act would require states to cross-reference their voter rolls with the DHS citizenship database and purge any registrations that can't be verified.

They spent four years flooding the country with millions of people who cannot legally vote – and those same four years blocking any mechanism to verify who is actually registered.
