Donald Trump Just Told NYC’s Socialist Mayor Something Nobody Saw Coming

Sep 24, 2026

Ten months ago, Karoline Leavitt stood at the White House podium and announced that “a communist is coming to the White House.”

Now Donald Trump is standing inside Gracie Mansion telling that same man he has “great potential.”

What happened inside that 90-minute meeting – and what Trump said to Mamdani when he walked out – just changed the entire game.

Trump Walks Into the Socialist’s House and Likes What He Sees

Trump arrived in New York on Monday ahead of his UN General Assembly address and made an unscheduled stop at Gracie Mansion – the official residence of New York City mayors.

It was his third face-to-face with Zohran Mamdani and their first meeting on Mamdani’s home turf.

“I certainly hope he will be a great mayor,” Trump told reporters afterward.

He reminisced about visiting Gracie Mansion over the years – “some great ones and some not so great ones” among past mayors – then looked directly at Mamdani.

“Hopefully, you’re going to be a great one,” he said.

That is Donald Trump, in front of cameras, openly rooting for a self-described democratic socialist who ran on ending all city cooperation with ICE, providing $65 million for sex-change procedures, and declaring New York a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants.

And Trump meant every word of it.

What Mamdani Actually Came to the Table With

The meeting had an agenda, and Mamdani came prepared.

He pitched Trump – again – on Sunnyside Yard, a 180-acre rail yard in Queens where the city wants to build 12,000 new housing units.

The price tag: $21 billion in federal grants.

That’s not a typo — and Monday marked the third time Mamdani has brought that number to Trump’s table.

Mamdani’s team has been playing this masterfully.

Back in February, they brought a mock newspaper front page to the White House – a riff on the famous 1975 Daily News headline “Ford to City: Drop Dead” – with a new version that read “Trump to City: Let’s Build.”

Trump, who has a well-documented weakness for seeing his name in a positive headline, was described by Mamdani’s communications director as “very enthusiastic.”

Trump has not committed to the $21 billion.

He acknowledged Monday that Sunnyside “is a big job” he’s been watching for 35 years, and that it would “probably” need federal money.

That’s not a commitment – but it’s not a door slammed shut either.

The Immigration Piece Nobody Should Overlook

Here’s where Trump’s base should be paying close attention.

Mamdani – the man Trump just called a potential “great mayor” – signed an executive order on February 6 barring ICE from entering city property without a judicial warrant.

He kicked ICE out of city facilities.

He set up a task force specifically designed to respond to and obstruct large-scale ICE operations.

He ran an outreach campaign telling illegal immigrants their “rights.”

And Monday, he pushed Trump directly on Temporary Protected Status – specifically for Haitians the administration cut off earlier this year.

Mamdani said afterward that immigration remains an area of “very different approaches, very different beliefs.”

He’s right about that.

The same mayor who is systematically making New York a harder place for federal immigration agents to operate walked out of Gracie Mansion Monday with Trump’s warm words still in the air.

Trump knows exactly who he’s dealing with.

What he’s doing is the same thing he did with Eric Adams – keeping a channel open to a city he genuinely loves, with a mayor who needs federal dollars and has shown he’ll actually pick up the phone.

That’s Trump’s leverage.

Mamdani needs the $21 billion far more than Trump needs another headline.

And Trump just reminded New York City – and every other blue-city mayor watching – that access to the president of the United States comes with conditions they’ll eventually have to reckon with.
