One in three military spouses right now wants her family to leave the service entirely.
Washington, DC officials knew, but they did nothing.

The Crisis Washington Measured but Never Fixed
One in five military spouses is unemployed and actively looking for work – and that is the number that has not moved in four decades.
The Pentagon has been measuring it since the 1980s.
Congress held hearings.
DoD commissioned studies.
Nobody fixed it.
The DoD's own 2024 Active Duty Spouse Survey found that one in three military spouses would now rather see their family out of the service altogether – a finding that sent retention planners into crisis mode across every branch.

Unemployment among active-duty spouses climbed to 29.9 percent in 2025, up from 21.8 percent in 2023.
Military spouses with a bachelor's degree earn 46 percent less than their civilian counterparts.
Military families move once every two to three years – 3.6 times as often as civilian families.
Every move means a lost job, a lost professional license, a lost career network, and sometimes a lost year of income.
Replacing a single military cyber expert takes three years and $500,000.
The problem got worse with each administration that promised to fix it.
What Trump Built and Why It's Different
On Monday, Trump signed an executive order in the Oval Office establishing the President's Military Spouse Commission.
Jennifer Hegseth – wife of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth – will chair it.
Christie Mullin, wife of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, will serve alongside her.
Twenty other military spouses representing the Joint Chiefs of Staff, each branch's senior enlisted leaders, and the service secretaries round out the commission.
The women gathered in the Oval Office brought over 400 years of combined experience as active-duty military spouses and had probably moved over 300 times between them.
These are not think tank researchers with theories.

These are women who lived it.
"I've spent the last year traveling around, meeting with military spouses and families around the world and around the country," Jennifer Hegseth said. "It's the same from Kentucky to Singapore – housing, healthcare, employment, childcare, education."
Pete Hegseth put the readiness connection in plain terms:
"No soldier, no marine, no member of the joint forces serves alone," he said. "If your family's not taken care of, then it causes hesitations and complications for the warfighters upfront."
Democrats Flew the Flag and Killed the Families Behind It
Here is what forty years of Democrat "support the troops" actually looked like.
Bumper stickers.
Yellow ribbons.
Speeches on the Senate floor.
Then those same senators went home and left a generation of military wives earning 46 cents on the dollar, packing up their kids every two years, and watching careers disappear because a professional license doesn't cross state lines.
When spouses face that kind of financial grind, they stop selling military life to the people around them.
That means the recruitment conversation happening at kitchen tables across America – where a son or daughter is deciding whether to enlist – is turning negative.
That is how you hollow out a volunteer military without firing a shot.
Every previous effort at this problem was buried inside the DoD bureaucracy, where it could be studied, reviewed, analyzed, and quietly defunded when the next administration arrived.
This commission reports directly to Trump – annual recommendations straight to the Oval Office, no bureaucratic buffer.
The White House confirmed the order directs the commission to support "the highest standard of military readiness" alongside every quality-of-life improvement.
Forty years ago, a general briefed a president on a 22 percent military spouse unemployment rate.
That president did nothing.
So did the next one.
And the next one.
And the next one.
But Donald Trump just signed the order.
