Donald Trump Just Said Something About the Filibuster That Republicans Need to Hear

Sep 24, 2026

The Senate filibuster just killed voter ID for the entire country.

Now Trump is warning that the rule protecting Democrats will eventually destroy the Republican Party forever.

Donald Trump just told Senate Republicans something about the filibuster that they needed to hear.

The Threat Democrats Won't Stop Talking About

James Carville said it out loud earlier this year.

When Democrats take back power, he wants to make DC and Puerto Rico states on day one, then pack the Supreme Court with four new leftist justices.

That's not a conspiracy theory.

That's a Democrat strategist openly describing the endgame.

Trump laid out exactly how it works on Truth Social this week.

DC votes 97% Democrat in presidential elections.

Puerto Rico has a 4% Republican vote – Trump's own number. Statehood for both territories permanently locks Republicans out of the Senate majority and the White House.

"It will be impossible for Republicans to ever win an Election again," Trump wrote. "In other words, it will be THE END OF AMERICA."

He's not wrong.

Democrats passed a DC statehood bill through the House in 2020.

Schumer tried to blow up the filibuster for voting rights legislation in 2022.

They've been working on this plan for years.

Thune Is Handing Democrats the Keys

Senate Majority Leader John Thune responded to Trump's warning the same way he's responded to everything this term – by explaining why Republicans can't fight back.

At least half the Senate GOP wants to keep the filibuster, Thune told the Ruthless Podcast.

He's argued that blowing up the rule would "enable all the crazy stuff" Democrats would do.

Here's what Thune isn't saying: Democrats are going to do that crazy stuff anyway the moment they win the majority.

Harry Reid nuked the filibuster for judicial nominations in 2013.

Republicans warned him the next majority would take it further.

They were right – Mitch McConnell finished the job for Supreme Court nominees in 2017.

Every time Democrats have controlled the Senate, they've pushed to eliminate the filibuster entirely.

Schumer failed in 2022 only because Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema stood in his way.

Those moderate Democrats are gone now.

Thune's argument amounts to: "We won't hand them the keys."

The problem is they don't need the keys.

They'll steal the car.

The SAVE Act Is Already Dead

The practical consequences of Thune's position are playing out in real time.

The SAVE America Act – which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot – has roughly 80% public support.

Over 90% of Republicans back it.

Trump called it his top legislative priority.

It's dead.

Blocked by a rule that lets a Democrat minority override the clear will of the American people.

Thune admitted the math months ago: "We don't have the votes either to proceed, get on a talking filibuster, nor to sustain one if we got on it."

Election integrity legislation that most Americans support – including a majority of Democrats – can't pass because of a procedural rule that wasn't even in the original Constitution.

The filibuster in its modern form dates to rule changes in 1917.

Reid modified it in 2013.

McConnell expanded that in 2017.

The idea that it's some sacred untouchable institution is historical fiction.

Sen. Ron Johnson put it plainly: "By ending the filibuster now, Republicans could pass important legislation that the public overwhelmingly supports, but Democrats oppose."

The Carville Math Is Simple

This isn't a complicated strategy.

Trump is describing elementary political arithmetic.

DC gets three Electoral College votes and votes 97% Democrat.

Puerto Rico would get roughly seven Electoral College votes.

Add four guaranteed Democrat Senate seats and five new Democrat House members.

The Senate math alone flips the chamber – and keeps it flipped for the foreseeable future.

Republicans are protecting the very rule that will hand Democrats the tools to make it happen – and Democrats have been very clear about what they'll do the moment that changes.

Picture what Thune's world looks like in four years if he wins this argument.

Democrats take the Senate.

Day one, they pass DC and Puerto Rico statehood.

Four new Democrat senators are sworn in before the next Republican president takes a single meeting.

The Supreme Court gets four new seats packed with activists who make Ketanji Brown Jackson look moderate. Voter ID is gone.

The filibuster – the one Thune protected – is gone too, because Democrats will nuke it the second they need to.

That's not a prediction.

That's Carville's actual plan, said out loud, on tape.

Trump is the only one in Washington doing the math – and Thune is the only thing standing in the way of the solution.
