Donald Trump Just Restored the Fitness Test Obama Killed Because Kids Were Losing

May 7, 2026

Barack Obama killed the Presidential Fitness Test because kids were losing.

Trump just signed a proclamation bringing it back.

And what he said at the signing ceremony is going to make every participation-trophy parent in America furious.

The Test Obama Couldn't Stand

The Presidential Fitness Test was born from a crisis.

In 1956, President Eisenhower looked at the state of American youth and didn't like what he saw.

Kids were soft.

He created the President's Council on Youth Fitness to fix it.

John F. Kennedy took the torch and ran with it – literally.

As president-elect, Kennedy published an essay in Sports Illustrated called "The Soft American," warning that the country was losing its physical edge to the rest of the world.

He launched a nationwide campaign encouraging Americans to take 50-mile hikes.

The fitness test was formalized in 1966 under Lyndon Johnson, complete with a presidential award for top performers.

Pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, running, a flexibility test.

Pass the standard, earn the award.

For nearly five decades, American kids knew what it felt like to earn something.

Then Obama got involved.

In 2013, his administration phased the test out in favor of something called the Presidential Youth Fitness Program – part of Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative.

No rankings.

No presidential award for excellence.

The program's stated goal was to focus on "health versus athleticism" – assessing kids as individuals rather than holding them to a shared standard.

The left called it more inclusive.

What they actually built was a generation of kids who never learned what it feels like to push past what they thought they could do.

What Happened in the Oval Office Tuesday

Trump signed the proclamation this morning, flanked by champions.

Lawrence Taylor – NFL Hall of Famer, one of the most dominant defensive players the game has ever seen.

Harrison Butker – the kicker who told the truth and didn't apologize for it.

Annika Sörenstam – one of the greatest female golfers who ever lived.

Paul "Triple H" Levesque – a man who built his entire career on physical excellence.

Bryson DeChambeau, Gary Player, Noah Syndergaard.

Trump didn't stack his fitness council with DEI consultants and progressive health bureaucrats.

He stacked it with people who know what it costs to meet a standard.

"This was a wonderful tradition," Trump said at the ceremony, "and we're bringing it back."

RFK Jr. put it plainly.

"For me, it was a huge item of pride when I was growing up," Kennedy said.

"We need to re-instill that spirit of competition and that commitment to nutrition and physical fitness."

JD Vance connected it to something every grandparent in America already knows.

"I think all of us have thought at one point in the last few years that kids spend a little too much time on their phones," he said.

This Is Bigger Than Push-Ups

Here's what Democrats won't tell you.

The White House executive order that set this in motion didn't just talk about healthy kids.

It called declining fitness a threat to America's "economy, military readiness, academic performance, and national morale."

The Biden administration spent four years worrying about pronouns in the Pentagon.

Trump is worried about whether American kids can do a pull-up.

More than 21% of Americans ages 2 to 19 are now classified as obese.

That's not a personal health problem.

That's a national security problem.

When the military can't find enough physically fit recruits, the country doesn't just get less healthy – it gets less defensible.

At the signing ceremony, RFK Jr. invoked his uncle's 1960 essay, describing how JFK believed America had prided itself on a "beef jerky toughness" – and was watching that toughness slip away.

Sixty-six years later, he was right about the trajectory.

Obama's solution was to stop measuring the problem.

Trump's solution is to fix it.

He brought back the standard, put champions in the room to model it, and told American kids that excellence is worth working toward.

That used to be the most American thing imaginable.

It still is.
