Donald Trump Just Issued a Stark Warning After He Caught the Smithsonian Breaking Federal Law

Sep 7, 2026

The Smithsonian spent decades turning America's most trusted museums into a socialist indoctrination machine.

Now the Trump administration just found something far worse than woke exhibits.

And Donald Trump issued a stark warning after he caught the Smithsonian breaking federal law.

Trump Drops an Antidiscrimination Charge on Smithsonian Leadership

The letter accuses the Smithsonian of violating federal antidiscrimination law.

Not bending the rules.

Not bad optics.

Breaking the law.

"The administration has recently uncovered evidence that the Smithsonian leadership's institutional culture may have resulted in significant violations of Federal antidiscrimination law, including creating a hostile work environment and engaging in practices that classify individuals and allocate opportunities, funding and other benefits on the basis of race, ethnicity and other protected characteristics," the joint DOI and White House letter states.

That's the government accusing a billion-dollar institution of illegally sorting employees by race.

If a private company did this, the Left would be burning it to the ground.

Because the Smithsonian is doing it in service of their ideology, the same people who cheered on DEI for 20 years are calling it a partisan attack.

What a Fox News Investigation Actually Found Inside the Smithsonian

The illegal activity didn't happen in a vacuum.

Fox News Digital identified roughly two dozen people in Smithsonian leadership and curatorial roles whose careers ran through Democrat congressional offices or progressive nonprofits before they landed at the institution.

That's not diversity of thought.

That's a political hiring pipeline, and you paid to build it.

And the man at the top – Secretary Lonnie Bunch III – has been the ideological engine driving all of it.

Bunch said publicly that he wanted DEI to become "so central that it's no longer talked about" at the Smithsonian.

He also said the institution should "legitimize important issues" like the 1619 Project – a revisionist history framework that leading scholars have publicly destroyed for factual errors.

For championing all of this, Bunch collected over $4.4 million in base salary and added benefits between 2020 and 2024 – paid through private trust funds while federal taxpayers covered roughly 60% of the Smithsonian's overall budget.

Meanwhile, the Smithsonian's America 250 exhibit – the one meant to celebrate this nation's founding – featured roughly three times as many items highlighting liberal figures and causes as conservative ones.

This is what you're funding.

Trump Is Not Asking for a Conversation Anymore

"Those executive departments and agencies cannot in good conscience continue to support the Smithsonian under current leadership by, for example, loaning artifacts for exhibits, enabling procurement processes and making discretionary grants," the letter reads.

That's not just money on the line.

That's artifacts.

That's procurement.

That's over $1 billion a year in federal support – and the entire relationship that comes with it.

White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley said it plainly: very few Americans want the National Museum of American History used, in the words of its own director, as a "prime tool of social justice."

The administration also has four openings coming up on the Smithsonian's Board of Regents this October – and those appointments require the president's signature.

Trump is about to have new leverage inside the boardroom itself.

They have no answer for what's coming.

This is what accountability looks like when you spend decades using taxpayer money to push radical leftist ideology on an institution America built and trusted.

He's presenting a bill.
