Bill Clinton stood at the Grand Canyon in 1996 and killed a Utah coal mine – without once setting foot in Utah.
Obama and Biden kept the land locked for 30 more years while Americans paid foreign countries for energy we were sitting on.
Trump signed two documents Monday that undid all of it – and what those documents reveal about why Democrats created these monuments in the first place will fire you up.
Clinton Locked Away the Land on Purpose
Grand Staircase-Escalante wasn't designated to protect ancient ruins.
The White House's own 2026 proclamation confirms it – Clinton created the monument specifically to block development of the Kaiparowits Plateau, home to one of the world's largest deposits of clean-burning coal.
A Dutch energy company called Andalex had spent nearly a decade working toward a coal mine that would have employed hundreds of workers in one of Utah's most economically depressed regions.
Utah's Sen. Orrin Hatch called it "the mother of all land grabs."
He was right.
Obama doubled down in 2016, adding Bears Ears to the protected list – a monument covering uranium-rich land that a uranium firm had already been lobbying to open.
Together the two monuments locked away an area larger than the state of Connecticut.
Biden then restored Trump's first-term reductions the moment he took office in 2021, slamming the door on Utah all over again.
Trump Called the Fraud by Its Name
Monday's signing wasn't just symbolic.
Trump reduced Grand Staircase-Escalante from 1.87 million acres to 181,541 – and Bears Ears from 1.36 million acres to 121,000.
Combined: 3 million acres unlocked.
"They took the land from the people quite honestly," Trump said at the Oval Office signing ceremony. "We're giving it back."
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox stood beside him and explained the legal reality plainly.

The Antiquities Act – the 1906 law Democrats have weaponized for 30 years – requires monuments to cover "the smallest area possible to protect the antiquities."
A monument bigger than the state of Delaware is not the smallest area possible to protect anything.
Cox called it "right-sizing."
The White House proclamation went further, listing more than a dozen critical minerals locked inside Grand Staircase-Escalante alone – chromium, cobalt, copper, uranium, vanadium, zinc, and others – resources the proclamation calls "vital to our economic and national security."
Democrats Will Take This Land Back the Moment They Can
Democrats found a legal mechanism – the Antiquities Act – that lets a president lock away millions of acres without a single vote from Congress or a single public hearing in the affected state.
Clinton used it to kill coal.
Obama used it to lock away uranium.
Biden used it to reverse Trump's first-term corrections the moment he had the power.
Every time a Republican president gives the land back, a Democrat president takes it again.
Trump ended that cycle Monday – and this time the cuts go far deeper than anything he managed in 2017.
Environmental groups and tribal organizations have already promised lawsuits, and a federal appeals court recently sent Utah's legal challenge back to a lower court, leaving open the central question of whether the Antiquities Act's demand for the smallest possible reservation can ever justify monuments this size.

Trump's lawyers say the same law Democrats used to create these monuments gives the president full authority to shrink them.
The left calls it a one-way statute.
Teddy Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act in 1906 to protect the Grand Canyon from gold prospectors.
He did not sign it so Bill Clinton could stand in Arizona, announce he was locking away 62 billion tons of Utah coal, and dare anyone to stop him.
Trump dared back.
And this time it wasn't a partial cut – it was 90 percent.
