Donald Trump Has Had Iran’s Crown Jewel Locked and Loaded Since 1988 and Just Proved It

Mar 18, 2026

Iran's mullahs spent 38 years ignoring Trump's threats.

Now they're watching their crown jewel burn.

What he said Sunday aboard Air Force One should terrify every mullah still standing in Tehran.

What Just Happened at Kharg Island

Operation Epic Fury hit Kharg Island Friday night.

U.S. Central Command obliterated more than 90 military targets – naval mine storage facilities, missile bunkers, air defenses, the runway, the naval base.

Every asset Iran would need to defend the island was vaporized. The oil infrastructure? Left untouched. On purpose.

That wasn't restraint. That was a message.

Speaking aboard Air Force One Sunday, Trump made the message explicit.

"We can do that on five minutes' notice. We have it all locked and loaded and ready to go if we want to do it," he said. "We chose not to do it."

The target he's describing handles 90% of Iran's crude oil exports.

Lose Kharg, and the regime loses its ability to pay its army, fund its proxies, and keep its economy from collapsing.

It earns Iran $53 billion a year in oil revenue – roughly 11% of the entire country's GDP.

One decision from Trump ends all of it.

Trump Has Been Planning This Since 1988

In 1988, while promoting The Art of the Deal in London, Trump told The Guardian exactly what he'd do as president if Iran pushed America too far. "One bullet shot at one of our men or ships, and I'd do a number on Kharg Island. I'd go in and take it."

Karoline Leavitt said it best on X Friday: "President Trump has been remarkably consistent his entire life on Iran. Anyone who says otherwise has not been paying attention."

This isn't a president reacting to a crisis.

This is a president executing a plan he's been developing since before most of his critics were born.

Senator Lindsey Graham put the strategic picture in plain terms. "Seldom in warfare does an enemy provide you a single target like Kharg Island that could dramatically alter the outcome of the conflict," Graham wrote. "He who controls Kharg Island controls the destiny of this war."

Iran Is Playing a Losing Hand

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi went on CBS News Sunday and declared his country hasn't asked for a ceasefire. "We are ready to defend ourselves as long as it takes," he said.

That sounds tough. Here's the reality.

Iran's Supreme Leader is dead. Its navy is destroyed.

Its missile stockpile is depleted.

U.S. and Israeli strikes have been running for three weeks and Iran has lost 100% of its conventional military capability by Trump's own accounting.

What's left is drones, naval mines, and desperation.

The Strait of Hormuz blockade is the regime's last card.

Iran is letting its own oil tankers through while blocking Gulf country exports – keeping cash flowing to Tehran while choking everyone else. As long as that blockade holds, Trump can't end the war on his terms.

Trump knows it.

Which is why Kharg Island is still on the table.

The Endgame Is Becoming Clear

U.S. officials told Axios that Trump is "drawn" to seizing Kharg Island outright – not just bombing it, but taking it.

One official called it "an economic knockout of the regime." Cut off the oil, and Iran can't pay its soldiers, keep the lights on in Tehran, or fund a single proxy anywhere on earth.

The military prep is already underway.

More than 2,200 Marines and an amphibious assault ship are steaming toward the Middle East right now – and analysts noted the Friday strikes hit exactly the targets you neutralize before an amphibious assault.

Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei is threatening retaliation.

If Kharg's oil infrastructure gets hit, Iran promises to destroy American-linked energy facilities across the Gulf. Saudi Arabia is in the crosshairs.

There are real risks.

But the alternative is worse: a broken Iranian regime with a permanent choke hold on 20% of the world's oil supply, bleeding the global economy one drone and one naval mine at a time.

That's not a risk worth tolerating.

That's a slow surrender.

Iran is betting Trump blinks.

They made that bet in 1988. They lost then too.

Trump has the Marines, the missiles, and the five-minute clock.

The mullahs have threats. We've seen how that ends.
