Gustavo Petro stood outside the United Nations and told American soldiers to disobey their president.
Trump stripped his visa the same day.
Now New York's socialist mayor just tried to bring Petro back – and found out exactly how that ends.
The Visa Petro Already Lost
Colombian President Gustavo Petro earned his visa revocation the hard way.
Standing outside United Nations headquarters in September 2025, Petro addressed a crowd of pro-Palestinian protesters and delivered a message directly to American troops.
"I ask all the soldiers of the army of the U.S. not to point their rifles at humanity," Petro said. "Disobey the orders of Trump. Obey the orders of humanity."

The State Department revoked his visa that day.
Petro kept pushing.
He criticized U.S. boat strikes targeting drug traffickers in Latin America, called Trump "complicit in genocide" for supporting Israel, and defended Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro after his capture earlier this year.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent responded with full OFAC sanctions, freezing Petro's U.S. assets alongside those of his wife, son, and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti.
Bessent made the stakes plain: "Since President Gustavo Petro came to power, cocaine production in Colombia has exploded to the highest rate in decades, flooding the United States and poisoning Americans."
The sanctions reached far enough that Petro's presidential plane was denied refueling at a Spanish airport during a Middle East trip – American-affiliated fuel companies refused service rather than risk violating the OFAC restrictions.
Mamdani Picks His Friends Carefully
Enter Zohran Mamdani – New York City's democratic socialist mayor, sworn in January 1, 2026, after defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Trump had called him a "100% Communist Lunatic" during the campaign and threatened to cut federal funding to New York City if he won.

Mamdani had scheduled a public forum with Petro for Friday at a New York university.
U.S. diplomats in Bogotá moved first.
American officials in Colombia's capital told Colombian counterparts that Petro's existing visa restrictions put him at legal risk the moment he entered the United States. Colombians read that message exactly as intended – Petro could face arrest.
A State Department official delivered the policy in plain terms: "A visa is a privilege, not a right. Any individual's U.S. visa is at risk of revocation if they visit America and outrageously implore U.S. soldiers to disobey orders of the duly elected president of the United States."
The meeting was dead.
What Mamdani Was Actually Building
This wasn't a routine diplomatic exchange.
Mamdani has used the mayoralty aggressively as a national platform – hosting Bernie Sanders at his 100-day rally, endorsing primary challengers against sitting House members, and positioning himself as the proof point for democratic socialism ahead of the 2026 midterms.
A public forum with Petro would have been exactly that: a photogenic summit between two leftist leaders openly hostile to Trump, staged in New York City, built for television.
The State Department understood what was being assembled and used the tools already in place to stop it.
This is Rubio's visa policy working as designed.
Petro isn't the first – the State Department revoked Mahmoud Abbas's visa along with 80 Palestinian Authority officials in August 2025, and Rubio has since expanded the policy to target anyone working on behalf of U.S. adversaries across the Western Hemisphere.
The Mamdani situation is different in one specific way: a sitting American mayor tried to import a sanctioned foreign leader for a political event.
The administration blocked it at the source, not at the airport.
Petro showed up at the UN on Wednesday anyway, declaring that "the state of Palestine should be free and sovereign" – which tells you exactly what kind of forum Mamdani had planned.
Trump saw the play.
He killed it before the cameras showed up.
