Donald Trump called it a "tremendous loss."
And he should know – he spent political capital confirming the woman who just stabbed him in the back.
What Amy Coney Barrett just did to Trump's election integrity fight will leave every conservative who fought to put her on the Court speechless.
What Barrett Actually Did
The case was Watson v. Republican National Committee, a challenge to Mississippi's law allowing mail ballots postmarked on Election Day to arrive up to five days later and still count.
Barrett's argument: federal law sets the deadline for voting, not for receiving ballots.
Justice Samuel Alito saw straight through it.
The decision is not just wrong – it "risks further undermining Americans' confidence in election integrity," Alito wrote in dissent, joined by Thomas, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh.
Four conservatives held the line.
Barrett and Roberts crossed it.
The conservative fury was immediate.
Republican Senator Eric Schmitt called it "a shockingly wrong opinion."
Constitutional attorney KrisAnne Hall wrote that Barrett invoked the Founders and originalism until the historical record stopped supporting her conclusion – then abandoned it.
"Barrett engages in judicial activism disguised as selective originalism," Hall wrote.
The Honest Elections Project's Jason Snead put it plainly: "Federal law is clear: all ballots must be received by Election Day to be counted."
Barrett disagreed.
This Isn't the First Time
Conservatives calling Barrett the new David Souter aren't being dramatic – they're being accurate.
Souter was the Republican-appointed justice who arrived labeled a conservative and left as a reliable liberal vote on virtually every major case.
The pattern with both Roberts and Barrett isn't a mystery.
Roberts has now sided with liberals on Obamacare, on immigration enforcement, and today on election integrity.
Barrett has broken from her conservative colleagues on presidential immunity, on emergency regulatory cases, and now on ballot deadlines that could flip the 2026 midterms.

Both were sold to conservatives as the future of the Court.
Both keep delivering for the other side when the stakes are highest.
What This Means for November
Fourteen states and the District of Columbia currently allow mail ballots postmarked by Election Day to arrive and be counted days later.
Today's ruling locks that in – right before November's midterm elections.
Democrats know exactly how to use late ballots.
They've done it before – races that looked red on election night flipping blue as ballots trickled in for days afterward.
The SAVE America Act would fix this.
It would require photo ID, proof of citizenship, and eliminate mail-in ballots except for specific exceptions like illness, military deployment, or travel.
The House has passed it three times.
Senate Republicans Collins, Murkowski, Tillis, Cassidy, and McConnell keep blocking it – refusing to touch the filibuster that lets Democrats kill it with 41 votes.
Trump named every one of them on Truth Social today.
"There is only one reason to oppose," Trump wrote. "CHEATING!"

He's not wrong.
The Real Damage Here
The political damage from this ruling runs deeper than one legal question about ballot receipt deadlines.
Trump built a six-justice conservative supermajority specifically to protect election integrity, roll back the administrative state, and hold the line on the issues that matter most to the tens of millions of people who voted for him.
Two of those six – Roberts and Barrett – keep finding reasons to side with the liberals at the exact moment it counts.
Gorsuch dissented correctly.
Kavanaugh dissented correctly.
Thomas and Alito dissented correctly.
The justices supposed to anchor that supermajority are the ones who just handed Democrats ammunition for the next four election cycles.
Barrett will be on that court for another four decades – long after the senators blocking the SAVE America Act are gone and forgotten.
Collins, Murkowski, Tillis, Cassidy, and McConnell know exactly what Barrett's ruling means for November.
They're choosing the filibuster over election integrity anyway.
