Democrats Refused to Pay TSA Agents and Now ICE Is Running Their Airports

Mar 28, 2026

Democrats blocked TSA paychecks for six straight weeks – and now ICE owns their airports.

Trump deployed his "Great American Patriots" to 14 major airports this week while Democrats played hostage games with DHS funding.

And here's what's happening inside those terminals that Democrats don't want you to see.

ICE Agents Are Running TSA Lines While Democrats Demand a Ransom

Trump went to Truth Social Wednesday and called out his ICE agents by name – "Great American Patriots" who spent years getting smeared by the radical left.

"They were unfairly maligned by the Lunatic Democrats for years," Trump wrote.

"And now, at the Airports, in addition to what they are supposed to be doing, they are helping people with bags, even picking up and cleaning areas."

The partial government shutdown hit DHS on February 14th.

TSA officers – about 50,000 of them – have been working without pay ever since.

More than 450 have quit.

On Sunday alone, nearly 12% called out sick nationwide – the highest absentee rate of the shutdown.

At JFK, nearly 40% of staff didn't show. At New Orleans' Armstrong Airport, 42%.

Democrats created every single one of those empty security lanes.

Their ransom demand: change how ICE operates or they won't fund the agency that protects your flights.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer specifically demanded ICE be "reined in."

That's the leverage Democrats chose – your spring break vacation against their protection of criminal illegal aliens.

Trump called it extortion. He's right.

The Agents Democrats Called Dangerous Are Running Airport Security Instead

For a year, Democrats and their media allies ran a relentless campaign painting ICE agents as masked, unaccountable thugs.

Now those same agents are the only federal law enforcement personnel in American airports who are actually getting paid – because ICE funding was locked in through Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill last year.

Border czar Tom Homan explained the deployment simply: ICE agents would help TSA "move those lines along" – guarding exits, managing crowds, freeing up screeners to do the specialized work only they're trained for.

Trump asked his agents not to wear masks inside airports – a deliberate visual choice distinguishing these men and women from the enforcement operations Democrats spent months demonizing.

These agents stepped into a crisis Democrats created, in uniforms, in public, helping American travelers.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy put the stakes plainly: if a deal isn't reached, what travelers are seeing today will look like nothing compared to what's coming.

This Playbook Is Older Than Democrats Want You to Remember

In August 1981, Ronald Reagan faced almost the exact same crisis in almost the exact same place.

Over 11,000 air traffic controllers walked off the job and dared Reagan to blink.

He didn't.

He fired every single one of them and sent military controllers into the towers to keep the planes flying.

The airports didn't collapse. The public didn't turn on Reagan.

They respected a president who chose their safety over a union's ultimatum.

Democrats are running that same pressure play today – hold American airports hostage until Trump surrenders on ICE.

The difference is they're not even the ones walking off the job.

They're forcing TSA workers to absorb the pain while they negotiate from safe Senate offices in Washington.

Reagan's move in 1981 didn't just solve a staffing crisis.

It sent a message every union boss and every Democrat in Congress understood: this president will not be held hostage, the public will back him, and the people using disruption as leverage will lose.

Trump rejected the latest compromise – even one his own Senate Republicans brought him – insisting any deal include his "Save America Act" voter ID requirement.

Forty-five years after Reagan, he's sending the same message.

Democrats bet that Americans hate ICE more than they hate four-hour security lines. Reagan taught us how that bet ends.
