CNN Dressed Up Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper as Podcasters and Megyn Kelly Just Destroyed Them for It

Mar 27, 2026

CNN just put giant microphones in front of Anderson Cooper and moved Jake Tapper into his office to film his show.

Megyn Kelly – the woman CNN is desperately trying to imitate – watched the whole thing go down on live television.

Now she's laughing, and the people responsible for this makeover should be embarrassed.

The Stunt That Backfired in Real Time

Jake Tapper sat behind his knickknack-strewn personal desk on March 23 and tried to explain what was happening to his audience.

"So, you're probably wondering what's going on," Tapper told viewers. "This is my actual desk where I do my actual work, not the desk in the studio."

He called it an experiment.

Megyn Kelly called it something else.

"It appears they are jealous of your numbers and possibly my own," Kelly told guest Piers Morgan on her SiriusXM show. "They've decided that if they try to make Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper and their sets look more like they are podcasters and in digital media, people will start listening to them again."

She should laugh.

In January 2025, Kelly's YouTube channel pulled 143 million views – beating NBC News at 132 million.

She now has 4 million YouTube subscribers and ranks as the third-largest conservative podcast in America, behind only Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson.

Kelly didn't just mock the set change. She diagnosed it.

"CNN's famous figures were cosplaying as podcasters," she said.

Why Big Microphones Won't Save a Dying Network

CNN has lost 45% of its primetime audience since 2017.

That's not a bad year – that's nearly a decade of Americans walking away and not coming back.

The 25-54 demographic – the one advertisers actually pay for – averaged just 102,000 primetime viewers in 2025.

An independent YouTuber with a webcam can touch those numbers.

Industry veterans who watched the podcast makeover roll out weren't impressed.

One former television executive called the moves "the least authentic thing you could do" because the format is "nowhere on the list of people's problems with mainstream media."

A second called it "desperation." A third said it was "a little late to the party."

Chuck Todd – who spent two decades at NBC before going independent himself – watched CNN's pivot and told The Wrap it felt consultant-driven, like some TV executive said, "What if we make it look like YouTube?"

Todd put his finger on exactly why it won't work.

Podcasters like Megyn Kelly earn trust by being owned and operated by nobody.

CNN is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. Putting Jake Tapper in his office doesn't change who signs his check – and every viewer knows it.

You Can't Buy Authenticity With a Microphone Stand

The media industry has already figured out what killed CNN.

It wasn't cord-cutting alone – Fox News grew 10% during the same period CNN hemorrhaged 45% of its audience.

The audience didn't stop watching the news. They stopped watching CNN.

What they started watching was unfiltered, personality-driven commentary from people who say exactly what they think.

Joe Rogan's three-hour Trump interview racked up 38 million views in three days – roughly 90% of the total viewership all legacy networks combined pulled on election night 2020. Megyn Kelly beat NBC on YouTube in a single month with six employees.

CNN responded by buying a microphone stand.

The revamp doesn't touch the reason people left.

It's wallpaper over a structural collapse – and a woman with 4 million YouTube subscribers just went on national radio to make sure everybody knows it.

Megyn Kelly left NBC in 2019 with her career pronounced dead by the television establishment. She went independent, built a podcast, added video, launched MK Media, and now pulls numbers that dwarf the networks that buried her.

CNN looked at all of that – and bought a microphone stand.
