Chuck Todd Melted Down on Camera Over Donald Trump’s July 4 Celebration and Even Bill Maher Called Him Out

Jul 7, 2026

The New York Times just published an op-ed titled "Trump Ruined the Fourth of July for Me."

Now the media is going after the most spectacular Independence Day in American history.

One former NBC anchor went on camera and said something so over the top that even his own side told him to sit down.

The Meltdown Heard Round the Country

Chuck Todd sat in front of a camera on July 4th weekend and told America that Donald Trump had "absolutely sullied the brand of America."

He said he felt "betrayed as an American."

He said he was "pissed off."

He said America 250 was "a lost opportunity."

He said he hopes the country gets a better celebration at America 275 – in 2051.

Twenty-five years from now.

That's how long Todd plans to stay angry about fireworks on the National Mall.

Trump gave a 28-minute speech at Mount Rushmore and a 23-minute fireworks show.

He told the crowd, "The American dream still lives, and the American flag still flies more proudly than ever before."

That's what made Chuck Todd feel "betrayed."

The Media Pile-On That Started Before Anyone Lit a Single Firework

Todd wasn't alone.

The Atlantic's Anne Applebaum declared that Trump had inevitably "destroyed the nation's 250th-anniversary celebrations" before the weekend even started.

A New York Times opinion writer wrote that the sight of red, white, and blue made her "heart ache."

The Washington Post devoted a full piece to the concern that Trump had made himself "central to the story."

Yes.

The president of the United States was central to the national birthday celebration.

Someone alerted the authorities.

These were not fringe voices.

These were the flagship outlets of American media – the same institutions that spent years lecturing conservatives about "threats to democracy" – now publicly announcing they couldn't stomach the American flag because Donald Trump was standing near it.

When Bill Maher Is the Voice of Reason on the Left, the Left Has a Problem

Bill Maher – not exactly a Trump ally – went on HBO weeks before the Fourth and told Democrats to stop the "partisan sulking."

He said if liberals keep treating patriotism as "something vaguely embarrassing," they deserve to lose the flag as a symbol.

He watched artists boycott the Freedom 250 concert – Poison, the Commodores, Martina McBride walking off one by one – and he didn't cheer.

He said it made Democrats look like they "don't really love America."

He said every performer who walked away handed Trump a cleaner stage.

He was right.

And they didn't listen.

Eleven Democratic governors boycotted the Great American State Fair on the National Mall.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker cited Trump's "politicization" of the celebration.

A woman from Massachusetts drove to Washington on her own dime to staff her state's empty booth – because her governor wouldn't.

She called the boycott "shameful."

Maher would have agreed.

This Is Not About July 4

Chuck Todd can dress this up in constitutional language all he wants – and he did, quoting the Founding Fathers at length.

But here's what actually happened this weekend.

Millions of Americans went to the National Mall.

They watched fireworks.

They heard a speech about American greatness.

They came home.

Chuck Todd sat in a studio and cried about it.

The same media class that told you January 6th was an attack on democracy is now furious that the president gave a patriotic speech on America's 250th birthday.

The same outlets that celebrated every Obama-era Fourth of July as a moment of national unity are now publishing op-eds about how the colors red, white, and blue cause physical pain.

They're not protecting democracy.

They're terrified they've lost the culture.

For twenty years, the media told you what patriotism was allowed to look like – who got to hold the flag, who got to give the speech, whose version of America counted.

That's what the meltdown is actually about.

Todd said the country is "bigger than any president."

He's right – and that's exactly why his panic doesn't make sense.

If the country is bigger than any one man, a great Fourth of July shouldn't be ruinable.

Unless what they're really mourning is that they no longer get to decide what a great Fourth of July looks like.

America turned 250 this weekend and didn't ask Chuck Todd how it felt about it.
