Chuck Schumer stood before reporters and called the SAVE America Act "dead on arrival" in the Senate.
Florida's legislature just sent him a message he won't be able to ignore.
On Thursday, both chambers of the Florida legislature passed a state-level proof-of-citizenship voting bill – and Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to sign it.
Florida Voter ID Law Makes State the Largest to Require Proof of Citizenship
The Florida House approved the measure 77–28. The Senate passed it 27–12. Both votes were nearly entirely along party lines – which tells you everything you need to know about which party trusts American voters and which one doesn't.
The bill requires voters to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering. Acceptable documents include certified birth certificates, valid U.S. passports, naturalization certificates, and government-issued ID indicating citizenship. Florida driver licenses will be required to display citizenship status beginning January 1, 2027.
DeSantis didn't wait to be asked. He posted publicly calling the bill "the Florida version of the SAVE Act" and saying it would "further fortify our state as the leader in election integrity."
That's the governor of the third-largest state in America publicly championing what Chuck Schumer called a bill that "destroys the country."
One of them is right.
Florida becomes the most populous state in the nation to mandate proof-of-citizenship to register to vote. Arizona and Kansas have had similar laws for years. Louisiana passed one two years ago. South Dakota and Utah just passed their own versions and are awaiting governors' signatures. New Hampshire mandated it for first-time voters in 2024.
While Democrats block a national solution, conservatives are building one state at a time.
Schumer Blocks SAVE America Act Despite 83 Percent Voter ID Support
Here's what the left doesn't want you to focus on: 83 percent of American adults support requiring voters to show government-issued photo ID. That's not a conservative number. That's a Pew Research poll. That's your neighbors, your coworkers, people who vote Democrat.
Schumer knows those numbers. He called the SAVE Act "Jim Crow 2.0" anyway.
Trump responded by doing something that made Senate Democrats very uncomfortable. He announced he would not sign any other legislation until the SAVE America Act passes. "It must be done immediately," he wrote on Truth Social. "It supersedes everything else. MUST GO TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE."
Schumer answered in writing: "There will be total gridlock in the Senate. Senate Democrats will not help pass the SAVE Act under any circumstances."
Read that again. The Senate minority leader is threatening total government gridlock – not to stop a war, not to protect a constitutional right – to stop Americans from having to prove they're Americans when they vote.
The federal bill passed the House 218–213 in February with nearly unanimous Republican support. It now sits in the Senate, blocked by Democrats hiding behind the 60-vote filibuster threshold. Republicans hold 53 seats. Some of their own – including Senators Murkowski and McConnell – haven't signed on. Senate Majority Leader Thune has declined to force a talking filibuster, saying flatly: "We don't have the votes either to proceed, get on a talking filibuster, nor to sustain one."
That's an honest admission. It's also a gift to every Democrat running in a purple state in 2026.
Florida Election Integrity Law Caught 198 Noncitizen Voters in 2024
Florida's Office of Election Crimes and Security found 198 likely non-citizens who voted in the 2024 election. More than 11 million people voted in that election. That sounds like a small number – until you remember that elections get decided by smaller margins than that, and until you remember that Democrats are fighting to make sure those 198 become 1,980 or 19,800.
DeSantis has spent five years building the infrastructure to catch this. He created the Office of Election Crimes and Security in 2022. His office has made nearly 1,500 criminal referrals to law enforcement. Thirteen have resulted in felony convictions.
That's not suppression. That's accountability.
Schumer and his colleagues want you to believe that asking voters to prove they're Americans is the same as Jim Crow. They're banking on you not noticing that every other major democracy in the world requires some form of voter identification. India and Brazil tie voter ID to biometric databases. Germany and Canada require paper ballots. Denmark limits mail-in voting to those who genuinely can't vote in person.
What Chuck Schumer is actually protecting isn't voting rights.
It's the uncertainty. The margin of error. The gap between what we know and what we can prove – and the elections that get decided inside it.
Florida just closed that gap. Chuck Schumer is still fighting to keep it open.
