Immigration becoming a top issue in hotly contested Montana Senate race
President Joe Biden’s border crisis has turned every state into a border state.
Montana is home to a Senate race this year that could well determine which party controls the Senate.
The state is dealing with a fentanyl crisis that’s seen record numbers of seizures during the Biden Presidency.
And Mexican drug cartels have begun to move into Indian reservations in Montana.
U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) is in the toughest race of his political life against Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL.
Montana is a heavily Republican state that former President Donald Trump won twice by more than 16 points in the 2016 and 2020 Elections.
Tester – the last statewide elected Democrat in Montana – has conveniently rebranded himself as tough border security in an election year.
He’s running commercials this year touting his support for border security that featured a border wall in the background.
But Sheehy’s campaign thinks they have an opening to go on the offensive against Tester over his record on border security.
Jon Tester opposed Donald Trump’s successful border security policies
“I’ve stood up to Biden by demanding action to secure our border and protect Montana’s way of life,” Tester wrote on X.
But when it came time to hold Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas accountable for his role in the border crisis, Tester sided with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
He voted for an unprecedented move to dismiss the impeachment charges against Mayorkas that shut down a Senate trial.
“What’s happening at the southern border is an absolute crisis, and it gets worse each day under the Biden administration and with career politicians like Jon Tester who talk a tough game about border security but aren’t getting the job done,” Sheehy stated.
Tester claims that he cares about border security when he’s facing a tough election, but he opposed Trump’s border security policies when the former President was in office.
He voted against Trump’s border wall multiple times and called it “ineffective and wasteful.”
“I will tell you unequivocally, a wall from sea to shining sea is not the right direction to go,” Tester said in 2019.
Tester’s only hope of winning is getting enough Trump voters to split their ticket and pick him in the Senate race.
But his opposition to Trump’s border security policies could be the final nail in his political career.
One Nation – a group run by allies of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) – is spending $15.2 million on TV and digital ads hammering Tester on his actual record and past statements on border security and immigration.
Voters in Montana are going to see a flood of ads reminding them that Jon Tester fought Donald Trump every step of the way on border security, despite what he claims in an election year.
