Bill Maher Just Told JD Vance His Vote Is in Play and Democrats Are Cowards

Jul 22, 2026

The Democrat Party spent thirty years counting on Bill Maher to call Republicans the threat to America.

Now he's on national television telling JD Vance his vote is up for grabs.

When you've lost Bill Maher, you haven't lost a comedian – you've lost the argument.

Maher Said the Quiet Part Out Loud on ABC

On Sunday's This Week, ABC anchor Jonathan Karl asked Maher point-blank: could he vote for JD Vance in 2028?

"Yes," Maher said.

No hesitation. No qualifier. Just yes.

Maher had already told Vance the same thing to his face – live on Real Time in June, in front of a national HBO audience.

"My vote is in play because it can't be Trump running," Maher said Sunday. "I'm not living in communist America."

Then he explained why.

Candidates in Colorado and Wisconsin are running on abolishing police and prisons entirely – not defunding them, abolishing them.

The Democratic Socialists of America's own platform calls for government takeover of major industries and abolishing the Senate itself.

Maher said he's read the DSA's platform in their own words, and nobody is going to tell him he isn't seeing what he's seeing.

"Don't tell me I'm not seeing what I am seeing," he said.

Then he said the thing that should terrify every Democrat running in 2028.

"Democrats are cowardly," Maher said.

Not lost. Not confused. Not misguided by bad advisors.

Cowardly.

That's a lifelong liberal, one of the most prominent voices the left has had for three decades, diagnosing his own party as too spineless to stop the radicals taking it over.

The Socialists Already Won Inside the Democrat Party

This isn't Maher being dramatic.

Socialist candidates backed by the DSA have been winning primaries across New York.

The party's most energized base is the one demanding no police, no prisons, no capitalism, and no American support for Israel.

"When we're cheering for the intifada," Maher told ABC, "I'm out."

He's already watching it happen, and the party's leadership is too scared to say a word about it.

Maher pointed out that prominent Democrats won't even come on his show.

"They don't come, and yet they got my vote," he said. "Why is that? So what is that all about?"

He answered his own question.

"Democrats are cowardly. They're cowardly," he added.

They'll take a liberal's support for decades, then refuse to sit across from him the moment he might ask something uncomfortable.

This Is What a Party Collapsing Looks Like

Maher's dinner with Trump at the White House in March 2025 told you everything about where this was headed.

Kid Rock arranged the meeting.

Maher went, spent two and a half hours with the president, came home, and reported that Trump was "gracious and measured."

The Left lost its mind.

His own fans turned on him for simply sitting down and talking.

Democrat politicians who had gladly taken his support for years went silent.

That's the tell.

The modern Left doesn't want engagement – they want loyalty oaths.

They don't want honest reporting – they want pure Trump hatred, delivered on demand, no matter what you actually witnessed.

Maher refused to deliver it.

The Democrats didn't lose Maher because he changed.

They lost him because they did.

Their base has moved to a place where abolishing the police, dismantling capitalism, and cheering for movements that target American allies is just where the energy is.

Maher looked at that and said he wasn't going with them.

If he won't, millions of voters who look exactly like his audience won't either.
