The mainstream media called Charlie Kirk divisive, controversial, and a lightning rod – then eulogized him with those same words the day he was assassinated.
Now the Left's most prominent television host is saying what conservatives knew all along.
Bill Maher just told his audience that the press mischaracterized Kirk's actual beliefs – and that the man they spent years demonizing was nothing like the monster they built.
What Maher Actually Said
On Monday's episode of his Club Random podcast, Maher was direct about the media's role in shaping the public image of the Turning Point USA founder.
"If you look at his statements – I've read the full statements, of course, because everybody is only interested in getting points for their team – they mischaracterized them," Maher said.
He wasn't finished.
"But even when I read the full statement, which were accurately characterized, I still disagreed with them,” he said. “But it wasn't what they presented."

Maher then said the quiet part out loud: "I liked him as a person. I'm glad I talked to him. I do not think he was a monster."
Maher appeared on the podcast to discuss a forthcoming documentary on Kirk's life – one he agreed to participate in precisely because he wanted to offer a more honest portrait than the one the press produced.
The April 2025 Club Random interview – the conversation with Kirk that aired just five months before the assassination – gave him something the media never offered its audience: actual context.
The Media Spent Years Building That Monster
They built it deliberately.
When Kirk was shot at Utah Valley University in September 2025, MSNBC host Katy Tur called him "a divisive figure, a polarizing lightning rod." CNN anchor Laura Coates described him as "quite the lightning rod" and "controversial."
ABC's Kyra Phillips ticked off a list of groups Kirk had supposedly offended – DEI, Jews, women, the LGBTQ community – within hours of the shooting.
The New York Times ran a headline using passive language – "dies" – rather than reporting that Kirk was murdered.
MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd went further, floating on air that Kirk's own rhetoric had invited the attack on his life.

Dowd was fired. But the framing had already done its work.
The Media Research Center caught every bit of it: the same anchors who spent years running the most decontextualized clips of Kirk's statements stood before cameras the day he was murdered and reduced his entire life to the word "controversial."
Maher's point isn't complicated.
He read the full statements.
The press ran the clips.
The Left Won't Talk to Anyone It Plans to Destroy
Maher's sharpest line on Monday wasn't about Kirk.
"Everybody's a 'monster' till you talk to them," he said.
He pointed to Rep. Anna Paulina Luna as another example.
An MSNBC opinion columnist once labeled her a "MAGA white supremacist cult" ally – part of years of coverage designed to ensure the left's audience never took her seriously enough to actually listen.
Maher had her on Real Time. He talked to her.
His verdict: "Love her. We had a great time. I talked to her after the show. I was like, 'If I had only known about you what I'd read, I would have thought crazy. You're not crazy.'"
Then he named the problem directly: "That is my single biggest issue with the left. They won't talk to people."
This is what the media machine produces.
It pre-profiles.

It decides who deserves to be heard and who deserves to be reduced to a three-word descriptor – then ensures its audience never sits through an hour-and-a-half conversation that might complicate that verdict.
They built the monster.
They made sure their viewers never had to meet the man.
Bill Maher met the man.
He disagreed with him on nearly everything.
He walked away unable to call him a monster.
The press made a different choice.
It never showed up.
