Bernie Sanders Tried to Interrupt Markwayne Mullin and Instantly Regretted It

Feb 28, 2026

Bernie Sanders has spent 50 years in Washington explaining why he can't fix healthcare.

Now a senator from Oklahoma just made him answer for every single one of those years.

What Mullin said to Sanders' face during a Senate hearing this week – and what Sanders couldn't say back – tells you everything about why nothing ever changes in Washington.

Bernie Sanders Defends Obamacare — Mullin Has the Numbers

The hearing was supposed to be a routine confirmation for Casey Means, Trump's pick for surgeon general.

Bernie saw an opportunity to lecture.

He didn't get the chance.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma cut him off before the first self-righteous paragraph landed – and reminded Sanders of something the media has let him ignore for half a century.

"You've been sitting here longer than I've even been alive," Mullin told him directly. "This is your problem. You should have fixed this a long time ago. You've been running on it so long – what have you been doing your whole life?"

The Affordable Care Act Promised Lower Costs — Here's What Happened Instead

Bernie Sanders was first elected to Congress in 1990.

Markwayne Mullin was born in 1977.

That means Sanders has been promising to fix American healthcare for longer than Mullin has been alive – and by any honest measure, healthcare got more expensive, more bureaucratic, and more broken under the system Sanders helped build.

Obamacare passed in 2010. Sanders championed it, pushed it, and defended it for 15 years.

Average family health insurance premiums have more than doubled since 2010.

Mullin didn't let that math go unnoticed. "We can agree that the healthcare system is absolutely not affordable," he told Sanders. "It was supposed to be affordable in Obamacare. How about we work together – scrap ACA, admit it doesn't work, admit you guys made a mistake, and work on something with President Trump to make healthcare healthy and affordable."

Sanders interjected anyway.

Mullin's response: "I'm sorry, I didn't ask your opinion. If I cared, I'd ask you, but I don't care about your opinion. You're part of the system. You're part of the problem."

"You've Been Sitting Here Longer Than I've Been Alive" — And Sanders Had No Answer

Washington has operated on a simple scam for decades – politicians like Sanders run on problems they never intend to solve because a solved problem ends the fundraising.

Healthcare is the crown jewel of that scam.

Sanders has raised hundreds of millions of dollars, built a national movement, and run for president twice – all on the promise that healthcare costs are a crisis only he can fix.

He never fixed it.

He made it worse.

And for 35 years, nobody in that Senate chamber said it to his face.

Until Tuesday.

Mullin's line wasn't a prepared talking point – it was the kind of thing your financially struggling neighbor says at the kitchen table when someone blames insurance companies for the sixth time. It connected because it was true, and because every American who has opened a medical bill in the last decade already knows it's true.

The real story here isn't that one senator embarrassed another in a hearing.

The real story is that Sanders has had the longest runway in American political history to deliver on his signature promise – and he delivered higher premiums, fewer choices, and a healthcare system that even his own party admits is broken.

Trump's team is now putting forward alternatives. Sanders' team is defending the status quo they spent decades pretending to fight.

Mullin saw it. Said it out loud. Sanders had nothing left but a quip.
