Bernie Sanders called Elon Musk the symbol of everything wrong with America.
Musk just posted the words that exposed everything wrong with Bernie Sanders.
And Elon Musk made Bernie Sanders instantly regret attacking him over his fortune.
What Musk Actually Said
Sanders posted on X Friday that one man – Musk – holds more wealth than the bottom half of all American households combined.
Musk fired back directly: "I have stock in SpaceX and Tesla, not some big pile of cash."
That's not spin.
That's a basic fact about how American wealth creation works – and it's one Sanders has been dishonestly obscuring for decades.
Musk's net worth isn't cash he's hoarding from workers.

It's shares in two companies that employ tens of thousands of Americans, push the boundaries of human achievement, and sit inside the retirement accounts of millions of ordinary investors.
When Tesla climbs, your 401(k) climbs with it.
When SpaceX wins a NASA contract, the pension funds holding SPCX stock win too.
Senator Mike Lee said what everyone was thinking: "Insanely, Marxists would prefer to punish you for that."
The Wealth Tax That Would Destroy What It Claims to Fix
Sanders and Rep. Ro Khanna recently introduced the "Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act" – a 5% annual wealth tax targeting 938 Americans.
The bill projects raising $4.4 trillion over a decade.
It projects Musk owing $42 billion.
Here's what it doesn't project: what happens when you force someone to pay $42 billion on stock they haven't sold.
The American Institute for Economic Research called wealth taxes on unrealized gains "fundamentally unjust, likely unconstitutional, and would hinder prosperity and individual freedom."
France tried it.
France abandoned it.

Australia experimented with annual unrealized gains taxes on real estate in 1985.
Australia scrapped it within years after watching investment collapse and administrative costs spiral.
Sanders Has Three Houses
While Bernie Sanders demands Musk's stock be confiscated to fund government programs, Sanders personally owns three properties – a lakefront vacation home in North Hero, Vermont, a residence in Burlington, and a condo in Washington, D.C.
His net worth sits around $3 million.
That's roughly 25 times the median American household net worth.
He collected his $174,000 Senate salary for decades.
He sold books off his socialist brand and pocketed the royalties.
Not once did he announce he was redistributing his advance checks to struggling Vermont families.
What This Is Really About
Sanders isn't angry that Musk has wealth.
Sanders is angry that Musk's wealth came from building things instead of from government – and that Musk now uses his platform to mock exactly the political class Sanders represents.
The wealth tax push is also tactically timed.
Sanders has been hammering billionaires throughout 2026, tying his crusade to a proposed $7 trillion AI tax that would hand Washington control over the entire technology sector.
Musk's net worth dropped from a peak of roughly $1.1 trillion in June to under $700 billion by July, then rebounded through August as SpaceX and Tesla shares recovered.
That volatility is the story Sanders doesn't want to tell.
And if you force the sale – if you make Musk liquidate billions in Tesla shares to pay Sanders' bill – you crash the stock, gut the retirement accounts of ordinary Americans, and punish the workers whose jobs those shares represent.

Sanders knows this.
He's been in Washington long enough to know exactly how markets work.
He's choosing to lie to his voters about it anyway – because the lie is more useful than the truth.
Musk built two companies that changed what humanity can do and made himself rich in the process.
Sanders built a career demanding other people's money and bought himself a lakefront view in the process.
One of those men created something.
The other one is mad about it.
