Barack Obama thought that he was the greatest thing to ever happen to the Democrat Party.
But he never realized what he did to the political system.
And Barack Obama was speechless over this terrible problem he created for Democrats.
Obama advisor warns Democrats have become party of elitists
Democrats are trying to figure out what happened after President-elect Donald Trump handed Vice President Kamala Harris a decisive defeat on election night.
Trump continued to make gains with voters without a college degree.
An estimated 56% of voters without a degree went for Trump and made up nearly 60% of the electorate, according to exit polls from The Washington Post.
CNN political contributor David Axelrod – who served as a strategist to former President Barack Obama – warned that Democrats have become “a smarty-pants, suburban, college-educated party.”
“I do have concerns about the way the Democratic Party relates to working-class voters in this country,” Axelrod explained. “The only group that Democrats gained within the election on Tuesday was White college graduates, and among working-class voters, there was a significant decline.”
Democrats have been losing the support of working-class voters since Obama’s Presidency, but that trend has been turbocharged during the Trump era.
The party that once fashioned itself as the party of the working man has firmly become one that represents the coastal elites.
Axelrod noted the hypocritical situation that Democrats found themselves in.
“The only group they won among– Democrats won were people who make more than a hundred thousand dollars a year,” Axelrod stated. “You can’t win national elections that way, and it certainly shouldn’t be that way for a party that fashions itself as the party of working people.”
Democrats condescending attitude towards voters’ backfires
Obama illustrated the sneering, holier than thou attitude Democrats developed toward anyone outside their group.
Axelrod pointed out that the condescending attitude Democrats took toward the working class was backfiring.
“You can’t approach working people like missionaries and say, ‘We’re here to help you become more like us.’ There’s a kind of unspoken disdain, unintended disdain in that,” Axelrod said.
Hispanic voters had a massive swing toward Trump in the election, especially Hispanic men.
Trump likely turned in the best performance with them for a Republican Presidential candidate in history.
NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd said that “coastal strategists” in the Democrat Party misread the electorate, costing the party the election.
“The big story of the night is the shift among Hispanics,” Todd said. “Look, Hispanic voters are swing voters and I think, you know, what’s interesting here is the Republican Party treated them the same way they treated White working class voters. They courted them the same way they treated White working class workers.”
Democrats treated Hispanics like an identity group and that backfired on them.
“The Democratic Party has spent a lot of time treating it as an identity group, you know, whether it’s Latinx, which sort of fell flat– and so there’s been a lot of hand-wringing about this inside Democratic circles,” Todd continued. “A real split, like, you know, it was a total misread sort of by the coastal strategists when it comes to how to target working class voters of color, and I think we’re starting to see sort of a working class coalition start to drift to the Right.”
Democrats have become increasingly out-of-touch with most of the country after it became the party of college campuses and coastal elites.
