AOC Said Defunding Police Meant Defunding Police and Now She Wants You to Forget That

Aug 21, 2026

AOC spent six years demanding America abolish ICE.

Now she's calling that era "crazy."

And Donald Trump watched her say it on national television and had two words for the whole charade.

She Said What She Said

In 2020, AOC didn't whisper her positions.

She shouted them into a microphone and dared anyone to push back.

"Defunding police means defunding police," she declared when New York City proposed cutting the NYPD budget by $1 billion.

"It does not mean budget tricks or funny math," she added.

In a fundraising email last year she wrote that ICE is "a rogue agency that should not exist."

She sponsored bills to decriminalize border crossings – twice.

She told the New Yorker she'd probably get rid of the entire Department of Homeland Security.

Those weren't off-the-cuff slips.

Those were her brand, her identity, and her fundraising engine.

Now she's on ABC laughing it all off with a borrowed line from a city councilman – "Woke 1 was crazy."

She never named a single position she got wrong.

She just laughed – and moved on.

Trump Sees Exactly What She's Doing

Trump sat down with Fox News correspondent Alexis McAdams on Long Island last Friday and didn't overthink it.

Asked whether AOC will run for president in 2028, he said he thinks she will.

Then he explained why it won't work.

"If you really look at it, they're all saying the same thing," Trump said of the Democrat left. "They're all trying to disavow themselves from what they said about crime."

Then he landed the sharpest point of all: sanctuary cities.

"I think you're going to see sanctuary cities start to end, because sanctuary cities are a disaster," he said. "And somebody like her, she was big for sanctuary cities. They cause crime."

He's right – and the timing couldn't be worse for AOC.

New York's new socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani just signed an executive order this year to strengthen the city's sanctuary protections, blocking ICE from entering non-public spaces without a warrant.

So AOC is trying to run away from sanctuary cities while the city she represents doubles down on them.

That's not a pivot.

That's a trap.

The John Kerry Playbook – and Why It Failed

Democrats have tried this before.

In 2004, John Kerry spent years voting for the Iraq War – then spent the entire presidential campaign trying to explain why he was actually against it.

He never recovered.

Voters didn't buy the explanation that he was for it before he was against it, and Bush won re-election.

AOC is running the same play on every major issue simultaneously – crime, police, ICE, sanctuary cities, prison abolition – and she's doing it in the internet age, where every quote is timestamped and searchable.

Her own congressional website hosted her defense of defunding the police, and "Defunding police means defunding police" is not a quote that softens with time or laughter on ABC.

And unlike Kerry, who at least voted on complex legislation, AOC said these things plainly and publicly because she believed them – or because she thought they'd make her famous.

Either way, she owns them.

The 2028 Math Is Simple

AOC leads the 2028 Democrat prediction markets on Kalshi and Polymarket.

She raised $9.6 million in a single quarter earlier this year, drawing donations from 266,000 individuals.

Ted Cruz has identified her as a top Democrat contender – a sign Republicans are already preparing for the matchup.

And Trump – who has never wasted a moment fearing a weak opponent – is already paying attention.

That's the real signal.

When Trump names you, he's not scared.

He's positioning.

He watched Democrats run "defund the police" into the ground and lose the House majority in 2022 along with a generation of working-class voters.

He watched "abolish ICE" become the bumper sticker Democrats now desperately want to peel off.

She didn't just back those positions when they were popular.

She fought for them, fundraised on them, and lectured anyone who questioned them.

"Woke 1 was crazy" isn't a policy position.

It's a sentence that reminds every swing voter exactly who she was – and asks them to trust that she's changed.

Trump isn't worried.

He's waiting.
