Americans are still feeling the aftershocks of Biden’s economic crisis.
Families are struggling to make ends meet after years of inflationary policies.
And Americans turned their backs on one major industry as President Trump works to fix Biden’s economic mess.
Americans ditch expensive air travel for budget vacations
The American Dream once included the ability to jet off to exotic destinations for summer vacation.
But now, as President Trump works to unravel the economic damage from the Biden years, Americans are canceling their summer flights and looking closer to home for vacation plans.
A new travel trends survey from Harvest Hosts revealed that Americans are dramatically changing their travel habits due to lingering economic uncertainty and fears about the perception of Americans abroad.
Nearly two-thirds of Americans (64%) are changing their travel plans because of the struggling economy, with 27% looking for cheaper trips and 14% taking fewer vacations altogether.
Another 12% have simply given up on traveling at all this summer.
“During the pandemic, we saw a massive rise in outdoor activities. Now, as the travel industry braces for another chaotic season and potential economic downturn, we’re seeing COVID-level upticks in demand for road travel and outdoor excursions,” said Joel Holland, CEO of Harvest Hosts.
Americans stay close to home amid mounting economic concerns
The Biden administration’s handling of the economy left a disaster for President Trump to clean up, with inflation eroding the purchasing power of the dollar for years.
Travelers are responding by trading wings for wheels, with 43% of Americans cutting costs by driving instead of flying.
The airline industry is taking a massive hit as a result. Nearly one-third (32%) of Americans said flight delays and cancelations are their greatest travel annoyance.
Even more concerning, 45% of Millennials and 51% of Gen Z have changed or reconsidered their air travel plans in the last six months, with cost (37%) and safety concerns (32%) leading the way.
The chaos in the airline industry that began under former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg remains a challenge that the Trump administration is working to address.
International travel takes a backseat as Americans support local businesses
The foreign policy failures under the previous administration continue to impact travel plans, with 59% of Americans expressing concern about how they’ll be perceived while traveling abroad.
Of those who changed their international travel plans, a staggering 74% cited worries about the perception of Americans overseas.
As a result, 55% of Americans are considering more domestic travel this year compared to past years. The shift is even more pronounced among younger generations, with 64% of Gen Z and 63% of Millennials planning to stay within U.S. borders.
Americans are turning to national parks and outdoor destinations, with 44% planning to visit National Parks this summer. Of those, 53% are considering an RV rental, showing a return to simple, budget-friendly vacations.
Road trips and outdoor adventures replace luxury getaways
With Americans still feeling the squeeze from years of Biden-era inflation, many are embracing the great outdoors. The survey found that 60% are considering more outdoor travel compared to city destinations.
Millennials in particular are heading to nature, with 74% booking outdoor destinations over urban vacations.
Hiking has emerged as the top travel experience (36%), while Millennials are embracing fishing (37%) and Gen Z is continuing the “cowboy core” trend with horseback riding (27%).
There’s also an increased interest in camping (34%) and RVing (33%) compared to the last two years, particularly among younger generations.
Joel Holland of Harvest Hosts explained that Americans are “getting creative and looking to stretch their budgets this summer, from driving instead of flying to hiking instead of scuba diving.”
Americans reclaiming summer as Trump works to rebuild the economy
Despite the economic headwinds caused by years of bad policies, Americans are finding ways to adapt while President Trump works to get the economy back on track.
More than half (52%) plan to take multiple smaller, closer trips rather than one big vacation this year. And 35% are willing to drive up to 30 miles out of their way to visit less crowded destinations.
There’s also a trend toward responsibility-free vacations, with 44% of Americans seeking child-free or adult-only experiences and 46% preferring not to travel with children under 16 or pets.
The bottom line is clear: The economic damage from the Biden years has fundamentally changed how Americans approach summer vacation. The airlines and international tourism industries are feeling the pain as travelers opt for more affordable alternatives close to home.
Americans haven’t given up on enjoying summer, but they’re having to get much more creative with their travel plans while President Trump works to repair the economic mess he inherited.
