American Factories Just Had Their Best Month in Four Years and Democrats Have No Answer

Aug 5, 2026

Barack Obama asked what magic wand Donald Trump would wave to bring back manufacturing.

The wand just worked – and the numbers released this morning prove it.

Here's what the one statistic buried in today's report means for every Democrat running in 2026.

The Number Biden Could Never Hit

The Institute for Supply Management released its July manufacturing report Monday, and the headline is stunning: 55.6.

That's the highest reading since May 2022.

That's seven consecutive months above 50 – the threshold that separates growth from contraction.

Biden's manufacturing legacy?

The sector spent 26 straight months in contraction under his watch.

Twenty-six months of American factories dying while he lectured you about the green economy.

Employment in manufacturing just returned to growth for the first time in 33 months.

That's nearly three years of factory workers losing jobs – ending now, under Trump.

The Machine Is Firing on All Cylinders

This isn't one good number.

Every major indicator moved in the right direction at once.

Production jumped 6.3 points to 58.5 – its highest level in nearly five years.

New orders expanded for the seventh straight month.

Export orders returned to growth.

Order backlogs are piling up – meaning factories have more work coming than they can immediately process.

Fifteen of 16 industrial sectors are now growing.

One machinery manufacturer told ISM exactly what's driving it: "Products going into data centers are at full procurement and manufacturing ramp-up." Demand for semiconductors and connectivity components, he said, is booming.

That's not a government statistic.

That's a factory owner describing what he's seeing on his floor.

“U.S. manufacturing activity surged in July at the strongest rate in more than four years — driven by soaring demand, record production, and a wave of new hiring,” the White House reported. “This is the latest clear result of President Donald J. Trump’s economic agenda delivering an industrial renaissance across America.”

“The Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing PMI shows the sector expanding for the seventh consecutive month — a sharp reversal after contraction in every single month of the previous Administration (outside a temporary post-pandemic bounce),” the release continued. “New export orders flipped firmly back into expansion, proving the world is once again demanding American-made goods.”

Trump Did What Critics Said Was Impossible

The Trump administration's tariffs have refocused businesses on domestic production and away from offshoring – exactly what economists said couldn't work.

The 2025 tax code changes, including immediate expensing of capital investments, gave manufacturers the financial incentive to build here instead of overseas.

U.S. Steel is restarting its Gary Tin Mill in Indiana, creating 225 American jobs.

That mill was shuttered in 2022 – under Biden – because cheap foreign imports flooded the market.

ISM estimates this July reading is historically consistent with 2.8% annualized real GDP growth.

“The Federal Reserve confirms the boom is widespread: manufacturing activity, payrolls, and wages are rising nationwide,” the White House reported. “Manufacturing wages climbed 4.2% year-over-year — beating inflation and putting more money in the pockets of American workers.”

American manufacturing is now pulling the whole economy forward.

The AI investment boom is adding rocket fuel – Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta collectively spent over $410 billion on capital investment in 2025, driving demand for American-made components that didn't exist at that scale two years ago.

Now every Democrat running in 2026 has to answer a simple question: if Trump's policies don't work, why are 15 out of 16 American factory sectors growing right now?

They don't have an answer – and voters already know it.
