A Bush-Appointed Judge Just Blocked the White House Ballroom and Trump Had the Perfect Response

Apr 5, 2026

A federal judge just ordered Trump to stop building the greatest ballroom in the world.

Trump called the group that sued him a "Radical Left Group of Lunatics" – and filed his appeal the same afternoon.

Now find out what the judge missed that changes everything about this story.

What Judge Leon Actually Said

U.S. District Judge Richard Leon – a George W. Bush appointee – ruled Tuesday that the National Trust for Historic Preservation is likely to win its case against the ballroom project, issuing an injunction that stops all above-ground construction.

His reasoning: no law gives the president authority to build at the White House without congressional approval first.

"No statute comes close to giving the President the authority he claims to have," Leon wrote.

Then he gave Trump 14 days before enforcement kicks in – an invitation to appeal.

The DOJ accepted before the afternoon was over, filing a notice with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

The ballroom is a 90,000-square-foot venue with Greco-Roman columns, privately funded through donations from businesses and individual donors.

Not one taxpayer dollar funds the construction.

Trump has been personally involved in every detail – floor plans, marble selection – and has promised completion by summer 2028.

Trump Fired Back Immediately

He went straight to Truth Social.

The National Trust, Trump wrote, is "a Radical Left Group of Lunatics" suing him over a ballroom that is "under budget, ahead of schedule, being built at no cost to the Taxpayer, and will be the finest Building of its kind anywhere in the World."

Here is what the media will not tell you about the group doing the suing.

The National Trust counts Attorney General Pam Bondi as an ex-officio trustee – meaning the DOJ is defending Trump against a lawsuit filed by an organization that includes his own Attorney General on its board.

Karoline Leavitt called the ruling "entirely unconstitutional" and vowed to fight it.

This Is the Pattern – and Trump Wins It Every Time

Since January 2025, district court judges have issued hundreds of injunctions blocking Trump administration priorities – deportations, agency restructuring, birthright citizenship orders, workforce reorganization.

The pattern is identical every time: a single judge blocks, the administration appeals, the Supreme Court reverses.

Trump has won nearly every emergency ruling at the Supreme Court level since returning to office.

Leon even handed Trump the legislative shortcut: Congress can authorize the project and construction resumes immediately.

With Republicans controlling both chambers, that path is short.

The Detail the Judge Did Not Account For

There is a military complex being built underneath the ballroom.

Trump confirmed it himself aboard Air Force One – a national security project the lawsuit inadvertently exposed.

"The military is building a massive complex under the ballroom," Trump said, "and that's under construction, and we're doing very well."

A federal judge just tried to halt construction on a facility sitting above a military installation.

That is not a preservation dispute.

That is a separation of powers fight with national security implications – exactly the kind of fight the DC Circuit and the Supreme Court will not let a district court win.

The greatest ballroom in the world, built at no cost to the taxpayer, with a military bunker underneath it.

A Bush judge wants to stop it.

He will not.
