Trump lays down a marker on the border
Donald Trump campaigned on using tariffs as a negotiating tool on trade deals and international affairs.
Trump pointed to Communist China and Mexico as two countries that took advantage of the United States for too long and that tariffs were necessary to affect a change in behavior.
20 days after the election, Trump showed he wasn’t messing around.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced 25 percent tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico due to both countries refusing to lift a finger to stop the flood of illegal aliens flowing into the country.
“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump is going with the stick option to force Canada and Mexico to take obligations to not facilitate illegal aliens marching through their country and into the United States.
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump added.
Trump said Mexico and Canada could avoid the tariffs entirely if they began cooperating with the United States in stopping illegal aliens at their own borders.
“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!” Trump concluded.
Trump also targeted Communist China with 10% tariffs over the Chinese serving as the conduit for deadly fentanyl pouring into America.
More than 100,000 Americans overdose every year on fentanyl.
Trump showed he takes this problem seriously and feels comfortable wielding tariffs to confront Communist China on this front.
“I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail,” Trump wrote.
Trump said Communist China made promises in the past but never kept their word.
This dishonesty left him no choice.
“Representatives of China told me that they would institute their maximum penalty, that of death, for any drug dealers caught doing this but, unfortunately, they never followed through, and drugs are pouring into our Country, mostly through Mexico, at levels never seen before,” Trump wrote.
“Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump concluded.
