Donald Trump responds to Melania Trump’s support for abortion-on-demand
Melania Trump roiled the 2024 election by coming out as an unapologetic supporter of abortion on demand.
The former First Lady’s comments put Donald Trump in the difficult positions of supporting his wife, and angering his base, or looking like he was tossing Melania Trump under the bus.
Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin was the first reporter to interview Trump after Melania made her feelings on abortion known.
And Melugin wanted to get Trump’s reaction.
Melania Trump declared her public support for abortion in her “Melania” memoir.
Trump explained to Melugin that he told his wife that this was her book and she needed to make it authentic.
“We spoke about it. And I said, you have to write what you believe. I’m not going to tell what you to do. You have to write what you believe,” Trump stated.
Trump told Melugin that his wife was popular with the public and that he fell back on his own refrain about abortion, which is that it’s a state issue and voters would have to follow their heart to decide what policies they would support.
“She’s very beloved,” Trump added.
“But I said you have to stick with your heart. I’ve said that to everybody, you have to go with your heart,” Trump concluded.
Melania Trump’s mess
Since the Roe decision, every Republican President professed to be Pro-Life while their wives were all pro-abortion.
The dynamic between Melania and Donald Trump is no different.
But what was different was the vehemence with which Melania Trump came out in favor of abortion-on-demand.
“It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government,” Melania Trump wrote in her memoir.
Melania Trump sounded like Kamala Harris’ speech writer with her false claims that women aborting babies advanced the cause of individual liberty.
“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes,” Melania Trump also wrote.
“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body,” Melania Trump added.
Melania Trump claimed the fundamental right didn’t belong to the baby’s right to live, but with the mother to end its life.
“It’s a very straightforward concept; in fact, we are all born with a set of fundamental rights, including the right to enjoy our lives,” Melania Trump argued.
“We are all entitled to maintain a gratifying and dignified existence. This common-sense approach applies to a woman’s natural right to make decisions about her own body and health,” Melania Trump continued.
No matter what answer Donald Trump gives about his wife’s comments, the media can spin it as a scandal.
