A life of fortune and fame in Hollywood is the pinnacle for many in the movie business.
But a shift is underway for some of the biggest stars.
And Matthew McConaughey gave a Top Gun star this surprising advice about leaving Hollywood.
Top Gun: Maverick star ditches Los Angeles to move back to Texas
Los Angeles, California, used to be the place to be for anyone working in the movie industry.
Now there’s migration out of the city by talent.
35-year-old actor Glen Powell is going into the peak of his career after starring roles in Top Gun: Maverick and the surprise romantic comedy hit Anyone but You with Sydney Sweeney.
He’s on his way up in the movie industry but he’s leaving Hollywood to return to his native Texas.
Powell told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s tired of the “fishbowl feeling” that comes with living in Los Angeles and having cameras on him constantly.
Some of the aspects that come with being a celebrity in Los Angeles make him uncomfortable.
“This idea that you’re a function here,” Powell explained. “Someone will go, ‘Hey, friend, want to come to this guy’s house? Yeah, come over.’ And then you show up, and suddenly you’re there for, like, someone’s tequila launch and all of a sudden there’s a photographer and you’re like, ‘Wait, what are we doing here?’ And I think you get enough of those that you just want to bring your family as close as possible — or run to them.”
Matthew McConaughey encourages Top Gun star to move back to Texas
Powell said that he talked about moving back to Texas with fellow Texan and A-list actor Matthew McConaughey.
“He’s [McConaughey’s] like, ‘Hollywood is the Matrix, man,” Powell recalled. “You plug in and it’s all fake world.’ He’s like, ‘Then I go to Austin, and I unplug. It’s all real. Those are my friends, that’s my family, my actions matter there.’”
McConaughey and his family left Malibu to move back to Texas in 2014 and haven’t looked back.
“And he’s right,” Powell said. “If you’re here, you live in the Matrix all the time, there’s no separation of those worlds. And for me, especially as my parents get older and my niece and nephew are growing up, I want a separation of those worlds.”
Powell is moving to the Austin area where he grew up and his family still resides.
“I think it’s really important to my mom and it’s more of an emotional thing for me,” Powell said. “Plus, I’m so close, I can taste it.”
He explained that his career is at the point where he can afford to leave Hollywood and not lose any opportunities.
More and more of the biggest names in Hollywood are leaving for a better life elsewhere.
Actor Mark Wahlberg and his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
He said that his children would have a better life outside of California.
“I want to be able to work from home. I moved to California many years ago to pursue acting, and I’ve only made a couple of movies in the entire time that I was there,” Wahlberg said in a 2021 interview.
“So, to be able to give my kids a better life and follow and pursue their dreams, whether it be my daughter as an equestrian, my son as a basketball player, my younger son as a golfer, this made a lot more sense for us,” Wahlberg added.
Actors no longer have to be anchored in Hollywood to have a successful career.
And they’re quickly leaving California in the dust.
