16 Republican Attorneys General Just Sent Donald Trump One Letter That Should Embarrass John Thune Into Action

Aug 12, 2026

New Jersey just admitted 6,600 noncitizens were quietly registered to vote – and no one told the governor for two years.

Now DHS has found 250,000 more in four states, and the Senate left town anyway.

That's why sixteen Republican attorneys general just sent Trump a letter that should embarrass John Thune into action.

The States Are Doing What the Senate Won't

Montana's Austin Knudsen led the charge, joined by AGs from Texas, Florida, Alabama, Pennsylvania, and eleven other states.

Their message was blunt: pass the budget resolution that unlocks the SAVE America Act, or own what happens to America's elections.

The SAVE America Act is not complicated.

Show proof of citizenship to register.

Show photo ID to vote.

Restrict mail-in ballots. Democrats call it voter suppression.

Most Americans call it common sense.

The House passed it in February.

Trump demanded it go to the front of the line in March.

Karoline Leavitt told reporters last month that Trump's "patience is running out" with Thune.

Thune's response: filed cloture on a crypto bill and headed for the exit.

The budget resolution these sixteen AGs are demanding isn't even the final bill.

It's the starting gun – a blueprint that kicks off a reconciliation process where SAVE provisions pass with fifty votes instead of sixty.

Republicans have fifty-three seats.

This is not a math problem.

It's a willpower problem.

What Democrats Were Hiding While They Lectured You About Democracy

The New Jersey scandal broke three weeks ago.

A software glitch at the Motor Vehicle Commission registered 6,600 noncitizens to vote.

Hundreds actually cast ballots.

Democrat Governor Phil Murphy says he had no idea.

His successor Mikie Sherrill says she only found out July 15, 2026 – three years after the glitch began.

Nobody in the Murphy administration thought to mention it.

Nobody was fired.

Democrats spent those same two years calling election integrity laws "voter suppression."

New Jersey isn't alone.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced California, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and New Jersey had 250,000 noncitizens on voter rolls based on publicly available data.

Twenty-four states – most of them Democrat-run – still refuse to use the federal SAVE verification database that would catch these registrations automatically.

Think about that.

Twenty-four states would rather risk noncitizen votes than run their rolls through a free federal system.

They have a reason for that, and it isn't protecting voting rights.

The Attorneys General Are Right and Thune Knows It

These aren't backbench politicians looking for a headline.

They're the top law enforcement officers in their states.

They prosecute election fraud.

They see the voter rolls.

They signed a letter that said one thing plainly: "No nation can remain great without secure and honest elections."

John Kennedy of Louisiana said it better: refusing to act on this is "a huge mistake."

Twelve states have now enacted their own SAVE-style laws because Washington won't move – seven of them in just the last two years.

The states are closing the gaps themselves while Senate Republicans argue about Pentagon funding levels.

The resolution would also send money to America's military and give relief to farmers getting squeezed by global market chaos.

This isn't a single-issue ask.

It's a comprehensive package that delivers on every promise Trump made – border, defense, agriculture, elections.

Thune pushed it to September.

The crypto bill gets September week one. Senators leave again in early October for midterm campaigning.

SAVE has now failed six Senate floor votes.

The math on available weeks doesn't work, and Thune knows it.

Sixteen attorneys general just told the president they have his back.

John Thune told him he could wait until September.
